  1. [[quoteright:350:[[SupermanReturns http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/LexLuthorBigWrong_7866.jpg]]]]
  2.
  3. ->'''LexLuthor:''' Come on, let me hear you say it, just once. C’mon.
  4. ->'''Lois Lane:''' [=~You're insane!~=]
  5. ->'''Luthor:''' No! Ha ha. No, not that, the other thing. C’mon, I know it’s just dangling off the tip of your tongue. Let me hear it just once, please?
  6. ->'''Lane:''' {{Superman}} will nev--
  7. ->'''Luthor:''' '''''[[MemeticMutation WROOOOONG]]!'''''
  8. -->-- ''SupermanReturns''
  9.
  10. -> ''[[CatchPhrase Isn't that cute?]] '''[[NoIndoorVoice BUT IT'S WRONG]]!'''''
  11. -->--Mr. Hollywood, ''WesternAnimation/TwoStupidDogs''
  12.
  13. Sometimes even the smartest of us get things wrong. But at least in those situations, we are always given a polite response saying that we are incorrect, right?
  14.
  15. '''[[SelfDemonstratingArticle WRONG!]]'''
  16.
  17. [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin As the title and the introduction should tell you]], this trope is basically a character simply yelling a ridiculously loud and blunt "'''WRONG'''", in a LargeHam, NeverLiveItDown, and NoIndoorVoice tone. The Big Wrong is often used by an insufferable {{jerkass}} as a response to someone being incorrect, giving out an incorrect answer, or even just giving out an opinion that the said {{jerkass}} disagrees with. It is often used in a TakeThat manner.
  18.
  19. It is often used and is usually seen [[InternetBackdraft during heated debates and the like]], among other things. While it is often used [[SeriousBusiness very seriously]], some forms of this trope have been found to be rather funny, and forms of MemeticMutation have been made from this trope because of this, as fans of LexLuthor can attest.
  20.
  21. Related to BluntYes, BigNo, TakeThat, {{Jerkass}}, EpicFail, NeverLiveItDown, [=~You're INSANE!~=], and [[CavalryBetrayal "You Thought]] [[ChangedMyMindKid WRONG, Kid!"]].
  22. ----
  23. !Examples:
  24.
  25. [[AC:{{Advertising}}]]
  26. * [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UEp3tLLZ6A This commercial]] from Ameriprise Financial about dreams uses this, although it is more subdued and more positive.
  27.
  28. [[AC:{{Film}}]]
  29. * The TropeCodifier is from a scene in ''SupermanReturns''. The image and quote above are LexLuthor performing this trope in the movie.
  30. * In ''TheLionKing'':
  31. -->'''Timon:''' Look, kid. Bad things happen, and you can't do anything about it, right?
  32. -->'''Simba:''' Right.
  33. -->'''Timon:''' '''''WRONG!''''' When the world turns it back on you, you turn your back on the world.
  34. * In the [[BusbyBerkeleyNumber musical scene]] in ''BlazingSaddles,'' the director shouts one through a megaphone to a dancer who stumbled.
  35. * In the film of {{Inkheart}}, Meggie tells Capricorn that she can't read The Shadow out of the book, since he destroyed the last copy. He then turns round, smiling gleefully, and utters '''WRONG!'''
  36. * '''''[[ConanTheBarbarian WRONG! CONAN, WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE?]]'''''
  37. * In ''[[ANightmareOnElmStreet Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare]]'', Freddy pulls this on John just before killing him, after the heroes learned that Freddy had a child of his own before he died.
  38. -->'''John:''' I know why you let me go.
  39. -->'''Freddy:''' Ohhh. Do you think ''I'm'' your daddy? '''Mmm-MMM! WRONG!'''
  40. * Used by the guards in ''Disney/{{Aladdin}}''.
  41. -->'''Aladdin''': Gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat, otherwise we'd get along!
  42. -->'''Guards''': WRONG!
  43. * CasinoRoyale example:
  44. --> '''James Bond''': No matter what you do, I'm not gonna give you the password which means your clients are gonna hunt you down and cut you into little pieces of meat while you're still breathing. Because if you kill me, there'll be nowhere else to hide.
  45. --> '''Le Chiffre''': But you are ''SO WRONG''! 'Cause even after I slaughtered you and your little girlfriend, your people would still welcome me with open arms... because they need... what I know.
  46.
  47. [[AC:LiveActionTV]]
  48. * In short, on any news network, political debaters will often use this trope or some variation of it at each other when it comes to debating any matter, especially if the debaters are in different political parties.
  49. * In ''{{Scrubs}}'', Dr. Cox is very fond of this trope, going so far as to [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrjwaqZfjIY&feature=related make a little song consisting only of the word "wrong"]], set to the tune of "Westminster Chimes".
  50. ** He even goes on to chime the hours with "You're wrong!"
  51. * In the 3rd season episode of ''StarTrekTheNextGeneration'' called "Sarek," After Captain Picard said a BigNo, he yelled a Big Wrong.
  52. ** Commander Chakotay also said it in the 3rd season finale of ''StarTrekVoyager''
  53. * Most GameShow hosts tend to avert this as most tend not to be mean and nasty and want to see them win. An example of this was shown in an episode of LateNightWithJimmyFallon when a [[http://www.hulu.com/watch/125518/late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-meredith-vieira-wants-to-be-a-millionaire mock game of]] WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire was played with Millionaire host MererdithViera, when Viera got a question wrong, Fallon yelled out '''WRONG''', thinking that she also uses this trope as a host. Viera told Jimmy that she averts this and mentions that she tends to be more sympathetic to failing contestants.
  54. ** However, on one of the Celebrity Millionaire episodes, Regis jokingly shouted '''"WRONG!"''' when Norm [=McDonald=] answered the $100 question, just to see what Norm's reaction was.
  55. * A ''SaturdayNightLive'' skit featured a parody of "The [=McLaughlin=] Group" where John [=McLaughlin=] (Dana Carvey) kept pulling this on the other panelists.
  56. * In ''{{Sherlock}}'', Sherlock texts '''WRONG''' to ''everyone in the room'' at the police conference.
  57. * John [=McLaughlin=] actually does this in RealLife to the other panelists on ''[=The McLaughlin Group=]'', including Pat Buchanan. A typical panel:
  58. -->'''[=McLaughlin:=] ISSUE ONE!''' Republicans take over Congress! '''QUESTION!''' ''WILL'' the Republicans squander their chance to govern? Or will they take bold moves? '''PAT BUCHANAN!''' final prediction. What is best in life?
  59. -->'''Buchanan:''' This is a great day for Republicans, we absolutely '''crushed''' the enemy, you can hear the lamentation of the--
  60. -->'''[=McLaughlin:=] WROOOOOOONG!''' The answer is, Republicans will ''fail'' to pass ''[obscure piece of legislation]'' and lose the House yet again! And that is all the time we have... '''BYE-BYE!'''
  61. * This is what happens on WhoseLineIsItAnyway during a number of guessing games. The Modus operandi is usually "Guess who I'm supposed to be!" Drew will call out "No!" if the guess isn't even in the ballpark.
  62. * {{QI}} does an interesting twist on this trope, because it's the ''obvious'' answers that are always wrong and most severely penalized, which is accompanied not by a spoken correction but by a klaxon.
  63. * In ''{{Bones}}'', a military demonstration starts by leading the cadets down the metaphorical garden path so the instructor can use this trope.
  64. -->'''Instructor''': What I'm cradling, lovingly, in my arms, is an M203 44-millimeter canister launcher. What's it for? Cadet Williams.
  65. -->'''Williams''': Tear gas!
  66. -->'''Instructor''': That's right. That is a meth lab. Our boys took it three days ago, how do you think they did that?
  67. -->'''Williams''': Tear gas!
  68. -->'''Instructor''': ''Wrong!'' And that is why we are here. I'm going to demonstrate for you [[StuffBlowingUp why we don't fire tear gas into a meth lab]].
  69.
  70. [[AC:{{Literature}}]]
  71. * In ''HarryPotter and the Half-Blood Prince'' when Harry is interviewing [[spoiler: Professor Slughorn about a memory that he had given to Dumbledore. Harry says that he thought there was something more in it and Slughorn replies]] 'Then you were wrong, weren't you? '''WRONG!'''"
  72. * Even Lemony Snicket gets in on the fun. Dark humor follows, of course, as the Baudelaire orphans meet a clock that instead of a bell, yells WRONG, WRONG, WRONG every hour. Lemony is not clear if he was able to obtain any information from the survivors (If any) on if the clock survived the fire that burnt down the Hotel Denoument it was in. I blame Count Olaf.
  73.
  74. [[AC:{{Music}}]]
  75. * The British band DepecheMode has a song called '''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvfcnpJRf0Q Wrong]]'''. While it is ''said'' in the same way, It's definitely not ''used'' in the same way.
  76. * Also, "Wrong" by WaylonJennings:
  77. -->It was a picture-perfect wedding
  78. -->Had the whole world at our feet
  79. -->Everyone thought we were headed
  80. -->Down a lover's easy street
  81. -->We'd have a house out in the country
  82. -->A picket fence, the whole nine yards
  83. -->We said our love would last forever
  84. -->It was written in the stars...
  85. -->'''''WRONG'''''! I should've known it all along...
  86.
  87. [[AC:ProfessionalWrestling]]
  88. * Edge basically told this to everyone when he proved his critics wrong.
  89. --> "''And you're '''WRONG! WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!'''''"
  90. ** A fan made a video out of this [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g701p3qeIww to the tune of Beethoven's 5th Symphony]]
  91.
  92. [[AC:VideoGames]]
  93. * The penalty for answering any question on ''TheImpossibleQuiz'' incorrectly: "'''[[color:red:WRONG!]]''' -1 LIFE"
  94. * In ''DawnOfWar: Winter Assault'', Crull gets one from Gorgutz. But he really deserved it for thinking the Titan was a greater war machine than the orks.
  95. * If you mess up one particular quick-time event in ''DeadSpace2'', Isaac will tell Nicole that she isn't real and can't hurt him. She roars "'''WRONG!!!'''" and breaks his neck.
  96.
  97. [[AC:WebOriginal]]
  98. * The ''SupermanReturns'' example [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/wrong-lex-luthor-ytmnds has since became a]] MemeticMutation, especially in the site [[http://ytmnd.com/search?q=lex+luthor&x=0&y=0 YTMND]].
  99. * The "'''You Are DoingItWrong'''" meme is often related to this.
  100. * ImAMarvelAndImADC did a ShoutOut and an IronicEcho to the Superman Returns example actually having it pulled ON Luthor.
  101. -->'''Luthor:''' Well I suppose...
  102. -->'''[[{{Spider-Man}} Green Goblin]]:''' '''''WROOONG!'''''
  103. * From "GrammarNazi" (a "College Humor" parody of IngloriousBasterds)
  104. -->'''[=LaPadite=]''': There was no Jews here.
  105. -->'''Landa''': Jew, or Jews, plural?
  106. -->'''[=LaPadite=]''': Plural.
  107. -->'''Landa''': '''WRONG!''' [[GrammarNazi You have to match your subject with your verb!]]
  108. * Here's what PaulMcCartney [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiJysf0mc4A has to say about silly love songs.]]
  109.
  110. [[AC:WesternAnimation]]
  111. * In ''[[WesternAnimation/TwoStupidDogs 2 Stupid Dogs]]'': Mr. H's CatchPhrase is "Well, isn't that cute... '''BUT IT'S WRONG'''!!"
  112. * Granny did this in an episode of ''TinyToonAdventures'', over and over again, as she asked questions to the class and announced that they were '''WRONG!!!''' at the top of her lungs before assigning a ton of homework to the victim.
  113. * Mr. Garrison used this in the ''SouthPark'' episode "Chickenlover", when Officer Barbrady is asked to read a line from the chalkboard, but gets it wrong due in part to his dyslexia.
  114. -->'''Barbrady''': (reading from the chalkboard) "Oprah Winfrey has huge knockers"...
  115. -->'''Garrison''': BZZZT! '''WRONG!''' Try again, dumbass!
  116. * In {{Metalocalypse}}, Toki recalls Skwisgaar's special brand of guitar tutoring:
  117. -->'''Skwisgaar''': Okay Toki, plays me the harmonics minor scales in the key of "D."
  118. -->'''Toki''': Ah, like this-''*plucks one note*''
  119. -->'''Skwisgaar''': '''WROOOOOOONG!''' ''*dumps a bucket of blood on Toki's head and they start fighting*''
  120. * From [[SpongebobSquarepants Krusty Krab Training Video]]
  121. --> Narrator: Sounds like a lot of hoop-lah over a little Krabby Patty, right? He-he, '''WRONG!'''
  122. * Auntie Shrew to Jeremy the crow in ''TheSecretOfNIMH''.
  123. -->'''Auntie Screw:''' You think the world owes you a living, right?
  124. -->'''Jeremy:''' Right.
  125. -->'''Auntie Shrew:''' '''''WRONG'''''!
  126. -->'''Jeremy:''' Wrong! Oh!
  127.
  128. [[AC:TabletopGames]]
  129. * The board game ''The Omega Virus'' says this when a player actually finds the virus and is forced to choose from one of four buttons to destroy it for good. Pick the wrong one and *bzzzzt* '''WRONG!'''
  130.
  131. [[AC:RealLife]]
  132. * Can often be seen during [[InternetBackdraft heated debates]], especially on the Internet due to {{GIFT}}. Heck, sometimes it is even used during non-heated debates.
  133. * Some editors in ThisWiki tend to use this at times...and {{Pothole}} it to this very page.
  134. * Several articles in TVTropes have Big Wrongs as their introduction to their descriptions. Such articles include {{BLAM.Literature}}, [[{{ptitlev7az52ei}} Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like]], HighOctaneNightmareFuel.EccoTheDolphin, HamAndCheese, HollywoodCalifornia, InternetCounterattack, MaohJuvenileRemix, LexLuthor, PeripheryHatedom, ReferentialMania, StrawmanNewsMedia, TheImpossibleQuiz, TheyChangedItNowItSucks, [[{{Ptitlerax1116nu5ji}} What Do You Mean, It's Not For Kids?]] and of course this very article.
  135. * Used as part of the United States Navy's ''standard communication procedure'', for use as an attention-getter when a repeat-back doesn't match the original message.
  136. * NATO comms voice procedure in general, at least in English-speaking NATO countries. "Wrong" is a specific code-word used to clearly indicate that the previous statement was incorrect. It can be used either by the person making the original statement or the recipient. E.g. "Enemy at grid 1235, WRONG, grid 1234."
