  14. How to build a Wicking Bed Garden
  15. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  16. Anonymous
  17. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  18. Build the frame on completely
  19. level ground, for even water
  20. distribution.
  21.
  22. A layer of sand or sifted soil on
  23. the bottom of the beds will help
  24. to prevent sharp objects from
  25. cutting into the plastic sheeting.
  26. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  27. Place the agi-pipe (or slotted
  28. PVC pipe) along the full length
  29. of the bed.
  30. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  31. Cover the bottom of
  32. the bed with screening
  33. rocks to just above the agi-pipe.
  34. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  35. [Optional]
  36. Connect the PVC upright pipe
  37. to the underground
  38. pipe using a PVC elbow:
  39. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  40. Cover the rocks
  41. with shade cloth.
  42. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  43. Re-using old garden soil? Sift the soil into the
  44. bed, removing stones, seeds, weeds, & roots.
  45. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  46. Then, add a generous mixture of
  47. organic compost, mushrom compost, lime,
  48. and blood & bone, -leaving a space at
  49. the top for mulch.
  50. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  51. A good rule of thumb is to make the soil layer
  52. equal to the nature root depth of the plant
  53. (about 300mm for above-ground veggies.)
  54. After adding the soil, it is recommended to
  55. fold the plastic down to about 330mm
  56. below the top of the bed.
  57. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  58. Drill drainage holes at the end
  59. of the bed, just above the in-laid
  60. pipe and rocks, and pour water
  61. into the reservoir, through the
  62. upright pvc pipe, filling the
  63. reservoir up to the drainage hole
  64. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  65. NOTE: The garden bed is watered from the top via the pvc pipe, creating an underground
  66. stream which waters the plants from below by ‘wicking’ up 300 mm through the soil.
  67. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  68. Cover the soil with a layer of
  69. organic mulch & plant seedlings.
  70. <== (This example uses sugarcane mulch)
  71.
  72. Drainage: preventing “wet feet”
  73. Submersion of roots in water for too long
  74. will cause “wet feet” which reduces growth,
  75. & can rot the plants. Fill the reservoir with
  76. water up as far as the drainage hole, then
  77. wait until the soil is dry before
  78. adding water again.
  79. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  80. NOTE: The reservoir can be deeper, for
  81. those who wish to build a higher bed.
  82. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  83. #FTW? Worms = Chelation! :-)
  84.
  85. Place a compost bio-box in the
  86. wicking bed, where bacteria,
  87. fungi and worms can breed up
  88. and re-fertilize the soil.
  89. (This bio-box must be regularly
  90. topped up with organic waste)
  91.
  92. Planter pot w/ extra holes =>
  93. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  94. The Frame: 20 sleepers, each 3.5 meters x 75 mm (8 feet x 3 inches). Red gum
  95. timber is stronger and will last longer than treated pine, which should be avoided in
  96. an organic garden because it will poison the soil. The price is almost the same.
  97. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  98. Plastic sheet: 11 meters long (36 feet). We used black 200 um plastic sheeting which
  99. usually comes in roles 20 x 4 meters wide. If possible, look for industrial strength
  100. plastic at a farm supply outlet. HINT: we found a hole in one role of plastic, and sealed
  101. it with pool lining glue.
  102. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  103. Shade cloth: 10 meters (33 feet) 70% shade cloth, for placement on top of the
  104. screening rocks. (or cut and overlap shorter off-cut pieces.)
  105. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  106. Agricultural tubing: 1/ Agi-pipe: 10 meters (33 feet) x 65 mm agi-pipe. 2/ Alternatively,
  107. the latest method recommends using pvc pipe slotted by hand, only at the bottom and
  108. facing down, to prevent the pipe clogging up.
  109. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  110. 70 mm pvc pipe, plus optional pvc elbows for attachment to long pipe.
  111. (Purchase all parts at one time,– to be sure they fit.)
  112. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  113. Rocks: 1⁄2 cubic meter 7 mm or 14 mm screening rocks (not river rocks)
  114. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  115. Soil: 1 cubic meter organic garden soil
  116. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  117. Compost: 1 cubic meter — mushroom compost is highly recommended
  118. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  119. NOTE: Left-over soil can be used in other parts of the garden.
  120. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  121. Any size or shape bed will do as long as there is provision for drainage. Several varieties
  122. of beds have been used: E.g. in-ground trenches for watering fruit trees, old bath tubs,
  123. rain water tanks, small plastic boxes, railway sleepers, shade cloth frames,
  124. chicken wire and straw, etc.
