  1. Q: As much as you’re willing to divulge, tell me about yourself. Age? Kind of job? Interests? That sort of thing.
  2. A: I won’t provide a name, but I go by mercs213 on Kickass Torrents and mercs215 on The Pirate Bay.
  3. 23 years old currently.
  4. Yup, I am employed. I work for a company that provides networking opportunities for CEOs.
  5. Interests and hobbies are mainly technology related. I enjoy constructing computers for family/friends and keeping up with emerging tech. And of course enjoying playing PC/video games (mainly from the RPG genre).
  6.
  7. Q: Can you talk to me about how you got into the torrent/sharing/piracy scene? Do you remember why you were drawn to it?
  8. A: When I was young I always enjoyed the games people would provide which I could not afford but wanted to experience. I promised myself I would become a torrent uploader and do the same. So here I am sharing games with the world.
  9.
  10. Q: It’s one thing to download games, it’s another to share them. Why be such a visible participant in piracy?
  11. A: I could just be a username that uploads games and says nothing. Instead like I communicate with my audience so they know I am listening. As a result they have more respect towards me and the effort I put into my work.
  12.
  13. Q: How much time do you spend per week (or per day, if it’s that intense) scouring for new games to to upload and share?
  14. A: Acquiring the games and making torrents doesn’t require much time. Maybe five hours per week (probably a high estimate) is spent creating and uploading torrents. I also receive no monetary gain in doing this.
  15.
  16. Q: From what I can tell, you’re actually buying some games and uploading them. Is that true?
  17. A: Yes, I do buy some and share them via torrents. Though most games I upload come from “The Scene” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_scene) or were uploaded by users on forums. My first game I decided to share was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which I bought from GOG.com (http://www.gog.com/). If I am going to buy and share a game, I typically purchase it from GOG as they are DRM free (I love this and will continue to shop there first instead of at Steam).
  18.
  19. Q: When you visit KickAssTorrents, it seems like any other gaming website. People asking questions, talking about what they like and don’t like. To an outsider, it can seem a little weird—they’re all people who are stealing games. How do you feel about it?
  20. A: KAT is just like any other community or forum on the internet. I don’t see anything weird about it. Also not everyone is there to download/pirate a game.
  21.
  22. Q: There’s a lot of disagreement over whether a pirated copy of a game is equivalent to a lost sale. Where do you land on that theory?
  23. A: The “lost sale” theory has been discussed many times and there is no hard evidence to support it. Developers and publishers should stop fighting pirates (which harms consumers as they resort to using DRM) and instead focus on creating the best possible product. Using Denuvo Anti-Tamper (or any DRM) on your game isn’t going to increase sales if people are refunding because of performance issues, subpar port, is boring, etc. We need more game developers need to be like CD Projekt Red! They know how to handle piracy as The Witcher 3 sold great and it was free of DRM.
  24.
  25. Q: Do you think your philosophy on sharing/piracy is similar to other uploaders? Why or why not?
  26. A: Yes, they all dedicate time out of their lives and money to provide people with games. If they are willing to do this I am sure their views somewhat resemble mine on filesharing/piracy. We can all agree on one thing though; if you enjoy the game, please support the developers by purchasing it please.
