- Chapter 2. Codes
- There are a number of codes that you need to be aware of. The ones with an asterisk by them must be learned.
- * Code 1 – Standard conditions. Regular patrol.
- * Code 2 – Routine call, no lights or siren. Assistance required.
- Code 2-HIGH – Priority call, no lights or siren. Assistance required.
- * Code 3 – Emergency Call, use lights and siren. Assistance required.
- * Code 4 – No further assistance required.
- * Code 5 – Marked units remain clear.
- * Code 6 – Out of vehicle on investigation.
- Code 6 Adam – Out of vehicle on investigation, requesting assistance.
- Code 6 Charles – Out of vehicle on investigation, subject is wanted.
- Code 6 George – Out of vehicle on investigation, gang activity. (CID to respond)
- * Code 7 – Requesting to go Off duty.
- * Code 10 – SWAT Pre-deployment call-up.
- * Code 11 – SWAT Operation.
- If a code 2 is announced you have the choice of going to that location or not. If you do go to that location you proceed with no special conditions and follow all traffic regulations along the way, notify the unit in question that you are proceeding code 2 with a transmission such as:
- “[Call sign], 10-17 Code 2, over.”
- If Code 2-HIGH is called you are required to divert if you are not on assignment and immediately head to that location still following all regular traffic laws and with no special conditions. Reply just as you would for a regular code 2 on radio.
- If a code 3 is called then you are to activate your overheads and siren unit and proceed to the location stopping at each and every intersection to check for traffic heading in either direction. If you are heading to a pursuit then you should proceed code 2 until you have visual sight on the pursuit and then proceed to move up to code 3.
- If a code 4 is called then you can de-activate all signals and return to code 1.
- Code 5 will be announced if a unit is doing something like a bait car operation or drug bust. This will be followed by a Location and if heard, you should stay away from that location at all costs.
- Code 6 will be announced when you step out of your vehicle to run your traffic stop. Code 6 Adam should be used to request a cover unit for your stop if you have not already done so. Code 6 Charles should be announced when you run a records check and your subject comes back wanted. Code 6 George should be announced when you discover gang activity and require CID to come and verify.
- If you want to go off duty you should call Code 7, an on duty supervisor will grant or deny you to go off duty.
- If a Code 10 is announced you must immediately return to the garage to be told what next by the on duty commander. Code 11 means that a SWAT operation is already in progress.
