  1. 01[11:20] <~zoofman> A few days after the ordeal at the lost little village, Harphe finds herself summoned to the Engineering and Alchemy tent for a formal meeting with the head engineer!
  2. 06[11:20] * Harphe wraps herself in every blanket in her tent before setting off. >:
  3. [11:21] <Harphe> "Yes, you called me, sir?"
  4. 01[11:22] <~zoofman> The Engineering tent is pretty jam packed with nifty gadgets, fire arms, explosive devices, beakers and flasks and all sorts of fun mixes. Alchemists and engineers alike at their usual work. As well as the main teleporting crystal for leaving The Bastion sitting dead center of the tent.
  5. 06[11:23] * Harphe makes a note to spend some time examining them after the interview.
  6. 01[11:23] <~zoofman> The head honcho here is quite easy to find, walking around assisting others. A hume man with a big bushy beard and wide blue eyes. "Ah! You must be Miss Florlindel!" He says with a wide, friendly grin. He removes an oily glove and offers a hand. "Name's Solomen. Heard some interestin' things about your expertice, got a few questions for ya before ya head off again."
  7. [11:24] <Harphe> Harphe takes his hand. "Of course, I'm always willing to teach others about what I do! Not that you require much in the way of explanation, I imagine. But still, what can I do to help you?"
  8. 01[11:27] <~zoofman> "Well, come along, I got somethin' to show ya." He leads you through the tent to a table of assorted objects, things seem randomly tossed on it. "Well, first I gotta ask, your expertise in...song magic, has me curious. I wanna hear about this from you, first, before I show you somethin' we found on this continent."
  9. [11:29] <Harphe> "Well, it's quite simple really. The harmonic frequencies serve as a link to a centralized source of power, which then tranfers the energy needed to make the sung commands a reality! That's the short version, of course."
  10. [11:29] <Harphe> "But what on earth could you have found that had to do with song magic?"

  12. 01[11:32] <~zoofman> He nods. "Hm, sounds similar to how some of the cardians work. As well as some Dwarven gadgets I've seen in my days. That's...definently differant than bard's as well." He picks up a small wooden...thing off the table.

  20. 01[11:36] <~zoofman> You've never seen an intrustment like this before, but it looks like a lute. Sorta. Has no strings on it, but near the base has a crystal interbedded where the chords would be tied.

  25. 01[11:36] <~zoofman> "When we got here, we found a shipwreck near where we landed."
  26. 01[11:37] <~zoofman> "We...found this thing on it, obviously ain't a normal instrument. None of the bards could figure it out, though."
  27. 06[11:37] * Mitzi shuffles into the tent as well, possibly wrapped in even more blankets than Harphe. She sniffles as she approaches the pair. "Sorry I'm late, I had to sneak a bit so Rosette wouldn't catch me going out while sick."
  28. 01[11:37] <~zoofman> He offers it to you, "I wanna see what happens when you try somethin' with it."
  29. 06[11:38] * Harphe takes it, then turns to Mitzi, distracted. "Oh, Miss Mitzi. While I can understand wanting to avoid Sister Rosette, you probably shouldn't be running around sick."
  30. [11:39] <Mitzi> "Achoo!" Mitzi turns and covers her face with her coat sleeve. "Uh huh, but a job's a job, so...here I am."
  31. 01[11:39] <~zoofman> "Good lord little lady you're covered in more hides than a ram. The hell did you do to get yourself like that?"
  32. [11:39] <Harphe> "Yes, but you can't do your job if you're falling down sick all the time, right?"
  33. [11:40] <Mitzi> "I uh...I walked into the storm to take a look, and I don't think I was wearing enou- achoo! -enough clothing. I'll be fine though."
  34. 06[11:41] * Harphe tisks
  35. [11:42] <Harphe> "....but in any case, let me see."
  36. 01[11:42] <~zoofman> He nods. "Well, alright, I don't intend to keep ya long other than expand on what Beard Beard probably told ya about your assignment. I get the feelin' he made it seem like all you'd be doin' is hittin' buttons."
  37. 06[11:42] * Harphe examines the ukelele, and strums where the strings would be.
  38. 06[11:43] * Mitzi smiles. "I did hope it was more than that."
  39. 01[11:44] <~zoofman> The crystal flashes lightly as you run your fingers along its base. A light green color. The wood itself has been unnaturally preserved. The instrument is obviously enchanted somehow. "Huh. Didn't do that when any of the minstrels around base tried to mess with it. Why not try your song magic, using it as a centrifuge for the power..?"
  40. [11:45] <Mitzi> "What's that you got there?" Mitzi starts to lean over but stops, remembering she's sick and that probably isn't a nice thing to do.
  41. [11:46] <Harphe> "Well, I can try, but. Well. Let me see what I can do." Harphe clears her throat, and begins singing. "Hyear, xA rre Diausee, hYImAmAr mea.."
  42. 01[11:48] <~zoofman> The crystal flares to life, a full shining, Tourmaline green. Arcane strings flicker to life from the base of the instrument to the neck.
  43. 06[11:48] * Mitzi listens from a less disease-risky distance and pre-emptively squeezes her nose so as not to interrupt the singing with a sneeze.
  44. 01[11:48] <~zoofman> "Holee shit."
  45. 06[11:49] * Harphe nearly drops the instrument in surprise. "Oh my."
  46. [11:49] <Harphe> "Where did you say you found this again?"
  47. 01[11:50] <~zoofman> "Try...strummin the strings? We literally found it in a ship that was crashed against the rocks when we got here. Considerin' the stuff we found at those Fox-folk villages...and what else was on the ship, probably domestic to this land."
  48. 06[11:51] * Mitzi nods. "Well, they had magic ink for casual journal writing. It kinda figures they'd be a culture highly steeped in magic."
  49. [11:53] <Harphe> "Just gives me some more questions about how they died..."

  58. 01[11:57] <~zoofman> Solomen manages a chuckle as his grin widens even more. "Well I'll be damned. That is most impressive. Both your playin' and the instrument itself. Huh."
  59. [11:58] <Harphe> "Ah, Miss Mitzi...I wouldn't touch those if I were you."
  60. [11:58] <Harphe> "They might, I don't know, explode or something."
  61. [11:58] <Mitzi> It's too late probably.

  63. [11:59] <Mitzi> "Huh? But I'm fine now." Mitzi wistfully looks at the floating notes and looks as if she's ready to prod at another.
  64. 01[12:00] <~zoofman> The notes dissipate like smoke as Mitzi touches them. "Well, this one might be just a common artifact, somethin' base line..."
  65. [12:00] <Harphe> "You think there are more out there, then."
  66. 01[12:00] <~zoofman> "I definently think this thing shows enough sophistication that there's more stuff like this out here."
  67. 06[12:01] * Harphe stops playing long enough to focussss and see if she's heard of anything like this before.

  77. [12:04] <Harphe> "I'd like to run a few tests later."
  78. 01[12:04] <~zoofman> "And that's why I wanted your expertise on this matter, Miss Forlindel. To see if you can find more artifacts like this, and to decipher their creation. I ain't no mage, but your speciality ain't one native to Vana'diel by no means. Maybe...hell, maybe it came from this land originally."

  80. 06[12:06] * Mitzi finds a place to sit and rests her head in her hands. "Damn you guys are good at finding awfully specific types of talent for this little camping trip."
  81. [12:06] <Harphe> "And...well, that would indicate quite a few things about my magic I'd like to explore."
  82. [12:07] <Mitzi> "Where did you pick it up then if it's not from Vana'diel?"
  83. [12:07] <Harphe> "Hm, me?"
  84. 01[12:07] <~zoofman> "Hah! Truth be told we found more of them, or rather some like that one, in the Fox-folk villages we inspected." He reaches under the table and pulls up a considerably larger, but similar item http://reikoobata.com/images/koto.gif
  85. [12:08] <Harphe> "Well, it's a bit of a long story, but it's something I've been chasing for a while."
  86. 01[12:09] <~zoofman> "Feel free to hang onto that one, if you wish. Not like any of us can do much with it anyway."
  87. [12:09] <Harphe> "I found a lexicon and notes on its use during an expedition into some ruins to find ingredients for a certain client's request, and, well."
  88. [12:10] <Harphe> "I've been pretty much winging it ever since. I wonder what should happen if I mispronounce something or go out of tune? :3c"
  89. 06[12:10] * Mitzi nods thoughtfully. "Which means some amount of their culture had to have found its way to ours."
  90. [12:10] <Harphe> "Well, they looked sort of like the Mithra, right?"
  91. [12:10] <Harphe> "Perhaps they're an offshoot."
  92. [12:11] <Harphe> "I guess we could go through the camp again sometime; see if they left any written records..."
  93. 01[12:12] <~zoofman> "Well the Mithra and the Viera are pretty close relatives anyway, not entirely impossible. Anyway! Mitzi, your task is indeed more than just settin' up our waygates around this continent."
  94. [12:12] <Mitzi> "Yeah, or look through some of the other villages I saw in the st- achoo!...sorry, in the storm."
  95. [12:13] <Harphe> "We're finding some way of protecting you from the cold first. :T"
  96. [12:14] <Harphe> "...And myself as well, I suppose."
  97. [12:14] <Mitzi> "I was hoping so." Mitzi slides off her seat and walks over to some of the other machinery in here. "...I am pretty good with machines, but it still surprised me that it's why I was chosen for this."
  98. 01[12:14] <~zoofman> "Well, it's more because you're a time mage that's proficient with them."
  99. 01[12:15] <~zoofman> "Do you know how teleportation spells actually work, Mitzi?"

  111. 01[12:18] <~zoofman> He gets out a map of Vana'diel and puts it down on the table. Harphe knows the next bit that Solomen is about to explain, about Crags.

  113. [12:20] <Mitzi> "Uh huh..." Mitzi kinda nods along.
  114. 01[12:21] <~zoofman> "We call these things Crags. Built by the progenitors. They are the gates to the afterlife, and powered by extremely potent crystals. Every continent has a few of them. People tended to settle near them as well, we're sorta drawn to them somehow."
  115. [12:22] <Mitzi> "...And does that mean there's one here to find as well?"
  116. 01[12:22] <~zoofman> "Typically, to use a teleportation spell or be affected one needs to have been exposed to one of these great crystals. One of the first things most adventurers used to do before airpasses got a bit more public was run around Vana'diel to touch them all."
  117. 01[12:23] <~zoofman> "And the spells trasport people to these Crags. As for one here..." He shrugs. "We haven't seen any signs of one."
  118. [12:24] <Harphe> "And that's why we had to import teleporter crystals, correct?"
  119. 01[12:24] <~zoofman> He then walks over to the teleportation device at the center of the tent. "Thanks to some ingenuity and havin' the world's best and brightest all gathered, though, we found a way to mimic the teleportation aspects of those crystals, with these things. Which is why we're makin' our own waygate system around the place."
  120. [12:27] <Mitzi> "And I'm certainly thankful for that given what we ran into while hoofing it." Mitzi tugs her blankets around her tighter. "So if I've got more to do than maintain this system, what is it? Refinements on how it works?"
  121. 01[12:29] <~zoofman> He looks back to Mitzi. "We wanna take things a step further. This is a fresh, unexplored land with no governances or mages councils to bog down our testing procedures. Things we'd never get away with on the mainland else the Church would be all up on our rear ends for tamperin' with the good Goddess's way. Crystal tech teleportation is great, but we want to try to implement somethin'...somethin' we don't quite understand yet."
  122. [12:30] <Mitzi> "What do you mean by that?" Mitzi is still all smiles and curiosity, but there's a noticeable slip in her composure for a second.
  123. 06[12:31] * Harphe raises an eyebrow, but doesn't say anything, not wanting to get thrown out of this very interesting conversation.
  124. 01[12:34] <~zoofman> "Ever heard of Tu'lia?"

  133. 01[12:38] <~zoofman> Harphe knows that Tu'lia is a floating island above Vana'diel that was constructed by an ancient race known as the Zilart. They came long before the other five native to Vana'diel, and tried to merge with the Goddess herself and enter the land of the gods, which they referred to as 'Paradise', an act that ultimately brought upon their ruin for tampering with things no mortal should tamper with.

Absolutely loaded with incredible artifacts, technology way beyond their time. Been there myself," he says, staring off for a bit with a sigh. "Truely a magestic place. But right, the point is..."
  141. 01[12:44] <~zoofman> "Let's ignore the fact they built a floating island for a second, or what things they tried to do there, that's not important. What I'm interested in is how they got up to it."
  142. [12:44] <Harphe> "What makes you think they came up, instead of down?"

  146. 01[12:45] <~zoofman> "Bah! Semantics! The important thing is it doesn't have diddly to do with crystals. It's just this little stone pedastle in some ancient ruins, you put your hands on it and bam you're teleported on up."
  147. 01[12:46] <~zoofman> "So if they could do it without crystals...and we can replicate the crystal effect anyway...and this continent might not even have a Crag for some god forsaken reason..."
  148. [12:47] <Mitzi> "It could still be powered by such. Or...the more advanced teleportation spells I've heard of allow the caster to telep- achoo! to teleport to a close location they're well acquainted with. If that were programmed into an artifact of a sort..."
  149. 01[12:48] <~zoofman> "Well, the key to instantanious travel, or at least something more robust than what we're used to, may lie in this place. And a time mage that can dabble into science as well as the arcane is perfect for tryin' to puzzle that out. We could completely revolutionize travel here!"
  150. 06[12:49] * Harphe 's eyes glaze over.
  151. 06[12:49] * Mitzi nods. "So what's it got to do with freezing to death up here? Sounds like any ol' lab could study that too."
  152. 01[12:51] <~zoofman> "Cause I ain't gonna lie, the Zilart did some dangerous, dangerous things. I can't advise anyone taking from their example."
  153. [12:52] <Harphe> "And here, I imagine, we'd have to worry less about scrutiny - and copycats."
  154. 06[12:52] * Mitzi frowns. "Tell me more."
  155. 01[12:53] <~zoofman> "But the people who once lived here...well, we don't know much about them yet. But they obviously didn't abide by the same standards we did," he nods to the arcane instrument. "And you're part of the expedition actually breakin' new ground here anyway."
  156. 01[12:53] <~zoofman> "More about the Zilart or..?"
  157. 06[12:55] * Mitzi nods. "With all due respect, I want to know what ground's been tread and what I'm getting into before starting something questionable enough you want to keep it away from the scrutiny of the Councils."
  158. 01[12:58] <~zoofman> "Well here's the thing about the Zilart; they were mad with power and wanted to ascend to godhood. That didn't work out so good for them. But that ain't even the part that's important here. You bring up the Zilart among a council of officials and its hush hush books closed, no matter what. All the records we got on them describe their insane transhuman ideas. That ain't what we're lookin' into here period."
  159. [12:59] <Harphe> "But we want to see if we can borrow some of their more harmless ideas?"
  160. 06[12:59] * Harphe examines her nails.
  161. [12:59] <Mitzi> "So..." Mitzi sniffles and rubs her nose. "Just a *really* fancy teleportation spell to start then?"
  162. 01[12:59] <~zoofman> "They had a stone obliesk that got them from one place to another, no crystals involved, which is somethin' pretty damn major considerin' what we know of magic, and no idea how the hell it works."
  163. 01[13:00] <~zoofman> "And we ain't even tryin' to copy that, just know if THAT works, there's obviously more ways we could use these spells than just jumpin' from crystal to crystal."
  164. 01[13:01] <~zoofman> "Pretty much, yeah," he nods. "Improved teleportation."

  167. [13:04] <Mitzi> "That doesn't sound so bad. I guess I'll also see if the culture here has any developments in the field as well? Do we...have a name for them yet?"
  168. 01[13:05] <~zoofman> He shrugs. "That's where you guys come in, again. We can't progress much further than the farmin' villages we found on the parimeter to the storm."
  169. 01[13:05] <~zoofman> "And that's not exactly tellin'"
  170. 03[13:05] * Harphe is now known as Anise
  171. [13:07] <Mitzi> "Well, ab- achoo! about that, I think I'll have to get some rest before going further in." Mitzi smiles and pulls her blankets closer. "and a thicker set of clothes it seems. I can take a looksee at anything you've compiled on the Zilart's teleportation device while I recuperate."
  172. 01[13:09] <~zoofman> "Well you do look like a bat out of hell at the moment, no offense." He says with a guffaw. "But yeah this ain't anything immediate for either of you two to get to work on. Go ahead and rest up and such. Nice to meet the both of ya finally, though!"
  173. 06[13:11] * Mitzi nods and starts to leave. "Oh sorry...uh, I never caught your name, being I strolled in late and all." She starts to untangle a hand from her mess of blankets to offer a handshake but stops midway upon remembering she's sick.
  174. 01[13:12] <~zoofman> He offers his gloved hand. "Name's Solomen!"
  175. 06[13:14] * Mitzi fumbles and manages to expose enough of her hand from the various cloth wrapped around it to return the handshake. "It's nice to meet you." She gestures toward the various machines and artifacts around the room. "and I'll be back later to pick up whatever notes you've got as well as look at some of these knicknacks if you don't mind."
  176. [13:14] <Mitzi> "Oh right um, name's Mitzi, but you knew that."
  177. 01[13:17] <~zoofman> "Just don't worry yourself about gettin' to work till you're over your illness, Mitzi."
  178. [13:19] <Mitzi> "Well, if you insist. I'll be on my way then. If the temple asks, you just sent me notes or Harfey here relayed the message or, y'know, just something like that!" she wraps her scarf around, covering half her face, as she heads out back to her tent.
