- The Turkish military isn't stupid.
- They're a well trained unit in a geopolitical hot zone.
- They have institutional experience with coups as well, given the country's history.
- When the military comes out to overthrow a government, you don't even hear about it until after it's done.
- They don't parade tanks around for hours.
- They just go in, arrest the government, and then a General makes a public announcement on TV. End of coup.
- Furthermore, Erdogan had already purged the military a number of years ago through the Ergenekon trials.
- He threw hundreds of officers and journalists in jail over trumped up charges of conspiracy and treason,
- with feeble manufactured evidence that would be laughed out of court in a developed country.
- In their place he installed sympathizers.
- The media came under state control, and the military was bent to his beck and call.
- A "coup attempt" of the scale we witnessed last night was rendered simply impossible because of this takeover years prior.
- Which is why I'm not buying even for a second that this was a legit coup attempt.
- Last night those soldiers rolled out to the streets with tanks, helis and fighter jets.
- They were unopposed for hours. Yet absolutely zero efforts were made to arrest any government officials or cabinet members.
- In fact their "attempt" was specifically timed for when Erdogan isn't even present in the seat of the government.
- They just wasted hours lobbing some bombs around, parading with military equipment, hijacking some TV stations, and terrorizing some citizens.
- All mosques began broadcasting from their minarets within seconds of Erdogan's initial public address, in a clearly coordinated effort planned in advance.
- Pro-AKP civilians flooded the streets trying to "save democracy" with "Allahu Akbar" chants.
- And then the civilian police magically managed to apprehend a very large military force that was infinitely better equipped and trained than they were.
- And we're supposed to somehow believe that this shit was real? Yeah, no. Fuck off, Erdogan.
- What transpired last night was not a coup attempt. It was a farce. It was pure theatrics, intended to scare the populace, not overthrow the government.
- It worked. Erdogan is more popular than ever before.
- His constitutional referendum on giving the President broad executive powers, which did not have public support before, will pass in a landslide now.
- He already dismissed 2000 judges from the courts today, and preparing the judicial landscape for witch hunt trials. And he arrested 7000+ officers.
- Every civilian and journalist who speaks out against him in the country will be locked up for treason even if they've had nothing to do with this "coup attempt".
- The country has passed a historic point of no return last night, and is now headed for really dark times.
- Buckle up, folks.
