  20.
  21. DAVID: If you start acting all weird and sus —
  22.
  23. [The front door opens and slams shut. Gail runs to it as Nick enters from his run. It is obvious he is not who she had been expecting.]
  24.
  25. NICK: Mum. You alright?
  26.
  27. [Gail swallows.]
  28.
  29. GAIL: Yeah, course. I’ll put the kettle on, eh?
  30.
  31. [Gail walks into the kitchen to fill the kettle with water.]
  32.
  33. DAVID: Blimey. You’re keen.
  34.
  35. NICK: Yeah. I like to keep fit, that’s all. You wanna try it.
  36.
  37. [David laughs.]
  38.
  39. DAVID: Suppose you’re gonna wanna hog the shower now, eh?
  40.
  41. NICK: No, it’s alright. I’ll wait my turn. I’m a guest after all.
  42.
  43. DAVID: No, no. It’s alright. You can go first.
  44.
  45. [David sniffs the air.]
  46.
  47. DAVID: You kinda stink.
  48.
  49. NICK: Huh. Cheers.
  50.
  51. [Nick is about to walk up the stairs when he abruptly stops.]
  52.
  53. NICK: Who’s that woman I saw opening the factory? Dark hair. Posh car. Dead fit.
  54.
  55. DAVID: Oh, erm… Carla! Yeah, Carla. She owns the place.
  56.
  57. [Nick nods and proceeds to walk up the stairs.]

  65. [EGO - THE SATURDAYS]
  66.
  67. OFFICE - UNDERWORLD
  68.
  69. [Carla is sat at her desk, doing paperwork. Sean slides the door open as he is putting on his coat.]
  70.
  71. SEAN: I'm gonna get off for lunch.
  72.
  73. [Carla hums.]
  74.
  75. SEAN: There’s a bloke here to see you. He's not got an appointment.
  76.
  77. CARLA: Who is it?
  78.
  79. SEAN: Nick. Gail Platt's son!
  80.
  81. CARLA: What's he want?
  82.
  83. SEAN: Search me. He said he wants a word.
  84.
  85. CARLA: Tell him to make an appointment.
  86.
  87. SEAN: He's absolutely gorgeous!
  88.
  89. [Carla pauses.]
  90.
  91. CARLA: Give him five minutes.
  92.
  93. [Sean laughs. He turns around to face Nick, gestures at him to enter the office, and exits the factory. Nick strolls in and stops in front of Carla's desk.]
  94.
  95. NICK: Hello.
  96.
  97. CARLA: You're Gail Platt's son?
  98.
  99. [Carla looks amused. Nick offers out his hand for her to shake.]
  100.
  101. NICK: Nick.
  102.
  103. [Carla shakes Nick's hand.]
  104.
  105. CARLA: Sorry. Carla Connor.
  106.
  107. NICK: I can see you're busy. I'll keep it brief. I used to run this place with Mike Baldwin.
  108.
  109. [Nick leans against Carla's desk.]
  110.
  111. NICK: Learnt most of what I know in here. I hardly recognised the place coming in.
  112.
  113. CARLA: Well, we had a major refit a while back.
  114.
  115. NICK: So you're doing well?
  116.
  117. CARLA: I can't complain. Times are tough, but so am I.
  118.
  119. NICK: Short story is I'm looking for investment opportunities and, call me an old romantic, this was top on my list.
  120.
  121. [Nick points to the building they’re in. Carla raises her eyebrows.]
  122.
  123. CARLA: So you want to, what? Buy into the business?
  124.
  125. NICK: I'd love to look into it. I've got the money, I've got the experience. I could be a real asset.
  126.
  127. [Carla hums and nods her head.]
  128.
  129. CARLA: Well, for your information, I have a partner and I'm doing just fine, thanks. And to be perfectly frank, I doubt whether you can afford it. So if you'll excuse me, I've got work to do.
  130.
  131. [Nick laughs.]
  132.
  133. NICK: Okay, okay.
  134.
  135. [Nick stands up from the desk.]
  136.
  137. NICK: I didn't mean to offend you. It's a genuine offer. Why don't you think about it, eh? I'll be in touch.
  138.
  139. [Nick exits the office. Carla shakes her head and smiles to herself.]
  140.

  147.
  148. NO. 8 - CORONATION STREET
  149.
  150. [David is in the kitchen, preparing two cups of tea. Graeme is sat at the table. He has in front of him a bag of crisps.]
  151.
  152. GRAEME: Come down the pub. Everything looks better through the golden glow of a lunchtime larger.
  153.
  154. [David transfers the cups of tea to the table and sits opposite Graeme. He sighs.]
  155.
  156. DAVID: Yeah. I probably would, but me mum’s upstairs and I don’t like leaving her on her own while he’s around.
  157.
  158. [Nick enters the house, slamming the door behind him.]
  159.
  160. GRAEME: What? Who don’t you trust? Him or her?
  161.
  162. [Graeme notices Nick.]
  163.
  164. GRAEME: Oh, hiya! Speak of the devil. Just talking about you.
  165.
  166. [David rolls his eyes. He and Graeme drink from their cups of tea. Nick comes to stand in front of them. He is messing about on his phone.]
  167.
  168. NICK: Where’s Mum?
  169.
  170. DAVID: She’s having a lie down. Why? D’you wanna wake her up and interrogate her a bit more?
  171.
  172. NICK: Something’s going on.
  173.
  174. DAVID: Yeah. In your imagination. Just drop it, yeah? What I wanna know is what’re you doing sniffing round the factory?
  175.
  176. GRAEME: Well, that’s not a good idea. Sniffing round a factory that makes knickers.
  177.
  178. [Graeme laughs. David joins in.]
  179.
  180. GRAEME: Could be misconstrued.
  181.
  182. NICK: It’s a legitimate business inquiry.
  183.
  184. DAVID: Yeah. It’s outta your league.
  185.
  186. NICK: You don’t know what league I’m in.
  187.
  188. DAVID: Well, I know you’re in danger of relegation.
  189.
  190. [Graeme laughs again.]
  191.
  192. NICK: What do you know about Carla?
  193.
  194. DAVID: Why do you wanna know?
  195.
  196. NICK: She said she had a business partner. Who is it?
  197.
  198. GRAEME: Yeah, that’d be her murdering husband, Tony Gordon. It’s a tragic tale of lust and betrayal.
  199.
  200. NICK: I’m all ears.
  201.
  202. DAVID: Er, I don’t think so, sunshine. ‘Ant you got to get back to work?
  203.
  204. GRAEME: No, yeah. That is true. Some other time maybe, yeah?
  205.
  206. [Nick is about to leave when he turns around to face David and Graeme again, both of whom are drinking tea.]
  207.
  208. NICK: So you going to the wedding?
  209.
  210. DAVID: What wedding?
  211.
  212. NICK: Haven’t you heard?
  213.
  214. DAVID: I don’t chase gossip like you.
  215.
  216. NICK: Tina and Jason.
  217.
  218. DAVID: Unlikely. Seen as he’s still married to our sister.
  219.
  220. NICK: Maybe they decided not to invite you.
  221.
  222. [David snaps.]
  223.
  224. DAVID: Why you here?
  225.
  226. NICK: I’m just visiting my favourite little brother.
  227.
  228. [Nick laughs to himself as he exits the house. Graeme stuffs some crisps into his mouth.]

  239.
  240. [Carla and Leanne are walking to the pub from the bookies.]
  241.
  242. LEANNE: I don’t know what to do with meself. I’m rattling round the flat on me own.
  243.
  244. [Carla coos with sympathy.]
  245.
  246. CARLA: Well, where’s Simon?
  247.
  248. LEANNE: Oh, he’s staying over at George and Eve’s just for the holidays, you know. He loves it there and, with me running the bookies, it’s just easier for now.
  249.
  250. CARLA: What about Peter?
  251.
  252. LEANNE: Well, it’s early days, but he seems to be getting on alright and they’re keeping him busy with loads of workshops and stuff.
  253.
  254. [Carla shudders.]
  255.
  256. CARLA: Ooh. I couldn’t bear rehab.
  257.
  258. [Leanne laughs.]
  259.
  260. LEANNE: You don’t need rehab!
  261.
  262. CARLA: Ey, I sometimes wonder.
  263.
  264. [Carla grabs Leanne’s arm. They have stopped walking outside the pub.]
  265.
  266. CARLA: Half five every day, I get chardonnay withdrawals.
  267.
  268. [Leanne laughs. Audrey and Nick exit The Rovers. The mood is awkward between the four of them.]
  269.
  270. NICK: You’re looking well.
  271.
  272. LEANNE: Yeah, you too!
  273.
  274. NICK: Small world.
  275.
  276. CARLA: Hello again!
  277.
  278. NICK: I’d love to stop and chat, but we’ve got a family crisis. Maybe we could talk later?
  279.
  280. CARLA: I’m busy all day.
  281.
  282. [Nick laughs.]
  283.
  284. NICK: Okay!
  285.
  286. AUDREY: Come on. We’re gonna do this…
  287.
  288. NICK: Duty calls.
  289.
  290. [Audrey and Nick walk away.]
  291.
  292. LEANNE: How’d you know Nick?
  293.
  294. CARLA: How’d you know him?
  295.
  296. LEANNE: Ooh. I think I need a drink.
  297.
  298. CARLA: I’ll buy you one!
  299.
  300. [Carla and Leanne enter The Rovers.]
  301.
  302. AUDREY: What was all that about?
  303.
  304. NICK: Oh, it’s not important.
  305.

  313.
  314. THE ROVERS RETURN
  315.
  316. [Carla and Leanne are sat in a booth, drinking a glass of white wine each.]
  317.
  318. CARLA: I can’t believe you were married. To him!
  319.
  320. LEANNE: Well, we all make mistakes.
  321.
  322. CARLA: How long ago was this?
  323.
  324. LEANNE: It was a million years ago! We were young! Too young. He’s a very manipulative man.
  325.
  326. [Carla nods.]
  327.
  328. CARLA: And pushy too.
  329.
  330. LEANNE: You’re not thinking of doing business with him?
  331.
  332. CARLA: No.
  333.
  334. LEANNE: Good.
  335.
  336. CARLA: Although he clearly provokes strong reactions in people.
  337.
  338. LEANNE: Well, don’t you go thinking that that’s a good thing.
  339.
  340. CARLA: I don’t.
  341.
  342. [Carla smiles despite herself.]
  343.
  344. LEANNE: You’re intrigued.
  345.
  346. CARLA: I’m not.
  347.
  348. LEANNE: He’s trouble.
  349.
  350. CARLA: Ooh, if you say so… So no regrets then on your part? No lingering feelings?
  351.
  352. [Carla gestures towards her heart.]
  353.
  354. LEANNE: No! Definitely not! Look, I’m just trynna warn you what he’s like!
  355.
  356. CARLA: I know. And everything you say tallies with what I thought when he first swaggered into my office.
  357.
  358. LEANNE: But?
  359.
  360. CARLA: But. Now I’m curious.
  361.
  362. [Carla rests her head on top of her interlocking hands. Leanne rolls her eyes.]
