- To : Everyone
- Subj: Farewell
- To the Citizens of the Jewel:
- The time has come for me to leave the city. The sixty-some years I have
- spent in the city have been full of memories, some pleasant.. a great
- deal not.
- The number of grudges I carry away with me are not small: I recall that
- the Eileithyians loosed a goblin army in the city sewers to steal the
- Sword of Angels. I remember Twilight's kidnapping of Lady Miramar, and
- the wrongs the Order of Justice did in an attempt to save Her. I saw
- with my own eyes the High Priestess of Justice driven to madness and
- suicide, ending with her leaping off the highest point of our Temple to
- impale herself on the Sword of Justice. I brood over the numerous
- kidnappings by the Babelites, one my own, and the last one resulting in
- the horrible torture and defection of Sothantos. And the result of so
- many missteps: sealed away by Dunamis to be hidden and protected, the
- Marvinogian, released by the Cult of Babel and one who was once
- Archprelate of the Church.
- Yet in this time, has Justice been dealt to these Gods and the
- miscreants who follow Them? Yes, we try--but what is the loss of essence
- to a God who wishes for Oblivion? What are shrines to a God with loyal
- followers? What is death to an adventurer blessed by Maya?
- The Celestians once tried to burn the Darkenwood with the help of
- Shallam. The forest stands today, shrinking from the Light, trying to
- hide from the sun, and the arachnoi and the shades and the Darkwalker
- temple infest that place still.
- In the Mhojave, there stands an altar to Justice that is the sole
- concrete victory Good has had in the last sixty-some years--the altar
- that stands as the sole reminder of Twilight's Obelisk that once
- inhabited the spot, struck down some twenty years after the wrongs done
- to the Order of Justice.
- That is the lot of the Shallamese--to fight the endless fight, to fight
- for the cause of Good. Some of these soldiers tire of the constant call
- to arms, of repeated loss, of so many defeats and failures, as I have.
- And beyond that, there are my own personal failings, but those are
- irrelevant to this post for the city, save for this: I have put forth my
- soul, and failed; I have lost faith, and I cannot go on.
- I will retire to the village of Eleusis, where awaits a lesser but more
- tangible fight. To those who remain: I am sorry, and I hope your faith
- is stronger than mine.
- Best wishes and Hermes' blessing to those who remain,
- Eschilde Moliuvia-Longshanks-Tasath-Xanatov
