  1. SHALLAM NEWS #11690
  2. Date: 4/24/2012 at 4:17
  3. From: Eschilde Longshanks
  4. To  : Everyone
  5. Subj: Farewell
  6.
  7. To the Citizens of the Jewel:
  8.
  9. The time has come for me to leave the city. The sixty-some years I have
  10. spent in the city have been full of memories, some pleasant.. a great
  11. deal not.
  12.
  13. The number of grudges I carry away with me are not small: I recall that
  14. the Eileithyians loosed a goblin army in the city sewers to steal the
  15. Sword of Angels. I remember Twilight's kidnapping of Lady Miramar, and
  16. the wrongs the Order of Justice did in an attempt to save Her. I saw
  17. with my own eyes the High Priestess of Justice driven to madness and
  18. suicide, ending with her leaping off the highest point of our Temple to
  19. impale herself on the Sword of Justice. I brood over the numerous
  20.
  21. kidnappings by the Babelites, one my own, and the last one resulting in
  22. the horrible torture and defection of Sothantos. And the result of so
  23. many missteps: sealed away by Dunamis to be hidden and protected, the
  24. Marvinogian, released by the Cult of Babel and one who was once
  25. Archprelate of the Church.
  26.
  27. Yet in this time, has Justice been dealt to these Gods and the
  28. miscreants who follow Them? Yes, we try--but what is the loss of essence
  29. to a God who wishes for Oblivion? What are shrines to a God with loyal
  30. followers? What is death to an adventurer blessed by Maya?
  31.
  32. The Celestians once tried to burn the Darkenwood with the help of
  33. Shallam. The forest stands today, shrinking from the Light, trying to
  34. hide from the sun, and the arachnoi and the shades and the Darkwalker
  35. temple infest that place still.
  36.
  37. In the Mhojave, there stands an altar to Justice that is the sole
  38. concrete victory Good has had in the last sixty-some years--the altar
  39. that stands as the sole reminder of Twilight's Obelisk that once
  40. inhabited the spot, struck down some twenty years after the wrongs done
  41. to the Order of Justice.
  42.
  43. That is the lot of the Shallamese--to fight the endless fight, to fight
  44. for the cause of Good. Some of these soldiers tire of the constant call
  45. to arms, of repeated loss, of so many defeats and failures, as I have.
  46.
  47. And beyond that, there are my own personal failings, but those are
  48. irrelevant to this post for the city, save for this: I have put forth my
  49. soul, and failed; I have lost faith, and I cannot go on.
  50.
  51. I will retire to the village of Eleusis, where awaits a lesser but more
  52. tangible fight. To those who remain: I am sorry, and I hope your faith
  53. is stronger than mine.
  54.
  55.
  56. Best wishes and Hermes' blessing to those who remain,
  57.
  58. Eschilde Moliuvia-Longshanks-Tasath-Xanatov
  59. Once Knight of the Templars,
  60. Once Priest of the Assembly,
  61. Former Minister of Development
