  5. ________________________________________________________________
  6.
  7. WHEREAS, A committee from the Science and Engineering Quad determining the lease for Forbes Family Café decided not to renew the lease held by independent vendor Ike’s Place from the Forbes Family Cafe in Huang Engineering Center (HEC), and instead awarded the lease to Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) as part of a competitive bid process, and
  8.
  9. WHEREAS, The committee’s stated reasons for eliminating Ike’s Place, namely the unanimous support of R&DE’s proposal by a committee of students and staff from the Science & Engineering Quad, and a survey of Engineering Quad community members that reflected priorities for Ike’s replacement as the quality of food, value for money, convenience, and the availability of healthy options and varied or seasonal offerings, among others, appear inconclusive to remove a vendor that serves more than just community members of the Science & Engineering Quad, and
  10.
  11. WHEREAS, the format of R&DE’s potential replacement outlet, and what forms of student payment it will accept, has yet to be publicly identified, despite its opening date of September 2, 2014, and
  12.
  13. WHEREAS, 97% of Stanford Students surveyed by Senator Andrew Aude have expressed support for Ike’s Place over an R&DE-operated replacement food outlet, and
  14.
  15. WHEREAS, approximately 1,540 signatures representing more than 1,000 of the undergraduate student body have been added to a petition opposing the replacement of Ike’s Place, and
  16.
  17. WHEREAS, the presence of Ike’s Place as a popular on-campus eatery enjoyed by many students proves that this issue affects Stanford students in a substantially different manner than if they were not Stanford students, in the meaning of Article I, Section 5 of the ASSU Constitution
  18.
  19. WHEREAS, there is evident and overwhelming student discontent with the decision taken by the committee of staff and students from the Science & Engineering Quad, and it would serve the Association’s best interest to counter this decision.
  20.
  21. WHEREAS, Article I, Section 5.A of the ASSU Constitution states that “Only this Association and its designees shall represent the entire Stanford student body, or a population of the Association, in any dealings with other elements of the University.”, and the students selected to the committee of the Science & Engineering Quad were not designees of the Association.
  22.
  23. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE 16th ASSU UNDERGRADUATE SENATE:
  24.
  25. THAT, the ASSU Undergraduate Senate unequivocally opposes the committee of staff and students of the Science & Engineering Quad’s decision to end the operation of Ike’s Place in the Forbes Family Cafe in Huang Engineering Center, and
  26.
  27. THAT, the ASSU Undergraduate Senate supports efforts currently being undertaken to preserve the current format of Ike’s Place and its operation in the Forbes Family Cafe in Huang Engineering Center, and
  28.
  29. THAT, the ASSU Undergraduate Senate urges the Contracts and Procurement Office to notify the President of the Association and the Chairs of the Undergraduate Senate and Graduate Student Council when any retail food outlet lease is up for renewal or when a request for proposal is put out for these locations, and
  30.
  31. THAT, the ASSU Undergraduate Senate urges that when Residential & Dining Enterprises Hospitalities and Auxiliaries seeks to sign contracts in retail food outlets on campus currently held by another organization, they should notify the Association President, and the Chairs of the Undergraduate Senate and Graduate Student Council, and
  32.
  33. THAT, the ASSU Undergraduate Senate will be happy to provide representatives to serve on these discussions alongside other affected students so that they are in line with Article I, Section 5.A of the ASSU Constitution, and
  34.
  35. THAT, the ASSU Undergraduate Senate will be receptive to providing Association resources in the coming weeks to further the goal of achieving such open dialogue.
