  1. In the short story “The Seahorse and the Reef” by Witi Ihimaera an important setting is the beach. This is the place where the friends and family fish. It is an important setting to the story because it’s where most of the story takes place, where the friends and family meet and where they gather seafood
  2. The Beach is an important setting because it helped me to understand the main idea about having respect for our land. This is seen in the story when the Dad explains to the boy about being kind to the sea and being grateful for what it gives. “Kids you must take from the sea only the kai you need and only the amount you need to please your bellies. If you take more, then it is waste”. The Dad is explaining that by taking a seahorse that the boy wanted from the reef, they were being ungrateful by taking an animal from its home. Later, he notes that he was happy to have kept the seahorse in its home – and he was happy to see the creature being so peaceful
  3. Secondly, the beach is an important setting because it is the place where the friends and family meet together.
