Sex, though the most natural act of all beings, is certainly one of the most controversial topics of all time. The subject is virtually inescapable, especially in America, where it is constantly being exploited through the media, with the majority of this exploitation being through television, film, and of course music. One of the most sexually expressive American musicians to date is undoubtedly Prince, whose past work sparked much controversy across the country. In fact, his 1984 song “Darling Nikki” caused the formation of the conservative Parents Music Resource Center, which in turn persuaded major record companies to start labeling albums with the “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content” labels that are all too familiar today. Still performing three decades after his musical debut, the great success of “His Royal Badness” is clearly due to the wide acceptance among his young but mature target audience. In combination, the drama surrounding songs like “Darling Nikki” and Prince’s superstardom serve as an excellent illustration of two conflicting generational climates.
