In Which Jamal Asks for User Data

  1. "A conversation with @GamingAndPandas turns into a PSA about "modern" paint applications (think: iOS/Android)"

  10. Jamal: Hey Fred. Can I ask a quick question?
  11.
  12. Hotwheels: ok
  13.
  14. Jamal: I have a hunch about something. If I sent you the link to a thread, would you be able to tell if it was nearly entirely one person?
  15.
  16. Hotwheels: no
  17.
  18. Jamal: Rats.
  19.
  20. Hotwheels: I'm surprised you'd even ask me that
  21.
  22. Jamal: I'm, like, 90% sure there's a thread powered entirely by one person, and have a pretty good idea who. Now it'll stay as a hunch.
  23.
  24. Jamal: Well, normally I wouldn't.
  25.
  26. Buuuuuut...

  29.
  30. Jamal: He's not good at not being obvious.
  31.
  32. Jamal: Anyways, thanks for listening. Sorry if I over-stepped. [arrow points to this with attached message saying "wrote before I saw"]
  33.
  34. Hotwheels: why are you still pushing this? e-celebs are not on the list of people who get user data
  35.
  36. Jamal: Sorry. I didn't realize I had asked for something that invasive. Was wondering about the samefag on a thread and didn't realize just what that entailed.
  37.
  38. Hotwheels: asking for any data not on the page is asking for private data which is only available to law enforcement
  39.
  40. Hothweels: (US)
  41.
  42. Jamal: Gotcha. I understand it now. I see why it was wrong to ask.
  43.
  44. Hotwheels: is that thread about you ?
  45.
  46. Jamal: It is.
  47.
  48. Jamal: I mean, it's an old address, but it's still me.
  49.
  50. Hotwheels: how'd they do this? [https://media.8ch.net/baphomet/src/1457349081616.png] that's pretty cool
  51.
  52. Hotwheels: well not for you, but it's still pretty cool. i guess because whatever program you used to black it out didn't do so totally
  53.
  54. Hotwheels: it was like a 90% black highlighter, but with the right filter you can get the underlying info
  55.
  56. Jamal: I think it's a contrast filter.
  57.
  58. Jamal: Yeah. Boost contrast, select what show, and change the color of the selection.
  59.
  60. Hotwheels: anyway, good luck. i remember seeing your tweets a lot last year but i don't think anyone really cares anymore. in the future, always use a pixel
  61.
  62. editor for things like this and use a completely black square #FFFFFF
  63. Hotwheels: i had a feeling those cell phone paint programs were vulnerable bit i didn't realize there were that bad if you went over the stroke multiple times
  64.
  65. Hotwheels: but then again it still makes, sense, each go over is 90% of 90%, but hex colors contain more data than that
  66.
  67. Howheels: a computer can differentiate #FFFFFE and #FFFFFF even if the human eye can't
  68.
  69. Jamal: Yeah. It's eye-opening.
  70.
  71. COMMENTARY: MOST "MODERN" PAINT APPS ARE INCAPABLE OF BLACKING OUT INFORMATION
  72.
  73. This is because all of their brushes are semi transparent to create a "real looking" appearance.
  74.
  75. I've noticed this myself in some poorly crossed out names of Facebook users on viral images, but wrongly assumed as did LP that going over it multiple times would help. It will not.
  76.
  77.
  78. Assumng a 75% opaque black brush...
  79.
  80. On stroke one white becomes #404040. Black remains #000000. Blind people stop here.
  81. On stroke two white becomes #101010. Black remains #000000. Some people stop here.
  82. On stroke three white becomes #040404. Black remains #000000. Most people stop here.
  83. On stroke four white becomes #010101. Black remains #000000. This is still not secure!
  84.
  85. Assuming the application is well implemented, only at stroke five is it actually secure.
  86. By five strokes, considering the inexact quality of blacking our with one's fingers on a touch screen, you've obscured other information you intended to keep.

  101. If you are not using solid #000000 to overwrite pixels, with no opacity, you are vulnerable!
