Causes for Endangerment

One of the main causes for their population decrease is the urbanization of Mexico. Lakes such as Lake Xochimilco are becoming polluted and poisoning the axolotls and destroying their homes. They have also become part of extensive research for scientific purposes since they are able to regenerate their limbs.
