  1. There are two main reasons that I believe I need a firearm for self defence.
  2.
  3. The first reason is that I travel a great deal. I am a resident at 21st Avenue, Melkbosstrand, Cape Town but my Mother and Grandfather live in the Eastern Cape. My Grandfather is over 80 years old and my mother is 54 years old. My mother did not marry again and she has lived alone for over 3 years. For these reasons, I visit my family as often as possible and this involves driving to Jeffreys Bay along the N2 and back which I try to do monthly (in the last 12 months, I have done this return trip 8 times). I am also an avid surfer and outdoorsman and my search for waves takes me all along the coast and often through rural areas and to places where there is limited or no mobile phone reception and police services are sometimes out of reach (please see Appendix A for local areas to which I frequently travel for surfing and Appendix B for written confirmation of my activities and where they lead me). I also travel internationally for surf excursions (please see Appendix C for proof of extensive international travel) and I have a German life partner who travels to Europe and back regularly (please see Appendix D for partner's passport information and proof of extensive international travel). My international travels and those of my partner cause me to drive to and from the Cape Town International Airport very regularly and at irregular hours. The N2 is host to an exceptional amount of crime, often of a violent nature (please see Appendix E for information on violent crimes taking place within the route I drive almost monthly). The stretch of the N2 to the Cape Town International Airport is particularly dangerous (please see Appendix F for information on violent crimes that have occurred on this stretch of road which I frequently use). In the past, I have been victim to attempted crimes while travelling and my partner and I already carry Pepper Spray for defensive purposes. I fear that it is only a matter of time before I fall victim to a violent crime while driving and I would use a firearm only as a last resort to defend myself if I am attacked and I am put at immediate risk of losing my life.

  5. The second reason that I believe I need a firearm for self defence is that I live in Cape Town with my life partner and feel unsafe in our home due to the high number of violent crimes in the Western Cape and the greater Cape Town area in particular. There were 49599 cases of residential burglaries, 2580 cases of murder, 3280 cases of attempted murder and 24519 cases of assault with the intention to inflict grievous bodily harm in the Western Cape in 2013 (please see Appendix G for confirmation of violent crime statistics from crimestatssa.co.za). On occasion, my partner and I care for and host my nephews overnight who are five and seven years old (please see Appendix H for confirmation from my sister that we are expected to care for them from time to time). In an attempt to deter criminals and prevent their success in attempted burglary, we have taken several security precautions including the installation of burglar bars, a security gate to isolate the sleeping quarters of the house and an advanced alarm system with 32 zones of detection as well as a very large dog that is always on the premises. However, a determined criminal might be able to access the sleeping quarters and in this case, if all other methods of defence or escape have failed, a firearm might be the last resort that saves my life or the lives of those in my care.

  7. I respectfully request approval for a firearm licence for the purpose of self defence so that I am able to protect myself and my loved ones in the event that either I am attacked or they are attacked while under my care and the only chance of my or their survival is the defensive use of a firearm.
