  23. Personally, I think that NSC is easier than HSNCT, but I think the difference in scoring can be more attributed to bouncebacks and 20 point powers.
  24.
  25. I have noticed that HSNCT tends to tossup more difficult material than NSC does. For example, this year, I heard a tossup on the Law of Dulong and Petit, something I have seen mentioned in power for NSC (I think, it might have been an mACF tournament) tossups. Looking at the 09 tournament, NSC also tends to use several "stock" clues that I have heard several times.

  38. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the questions at NSC this year, as they seemed to effectively combat the drop-down of college material into the high school game. I can't think of any question that struck me as inappropriately difficult, though some of the science hard parts seemed a bit extreme (though I can't really tell, as my science knowledge is fairly weak anyway). I hope that people who have expressed concerns about the difficulty of NSC questions will see this year's set as encouraging.

  50. After reading the 2010 PACE set, i concluded that it had more academically tougher questions, but the sheer randomness of NAQT makes it harder in a different way. PACE is considered easier because their cannon is so much smaller than that of NAQT.

  63. Where did you get the PACE 2010 set from? I haven't seen where they have been posted online yet.

  90. Have y'all heard that a certain high school player (NOT from GA thank God!) had access to the PACE Nationals questions BEFORE they were played? And he PLAYED them after reading them! LOL! Looks like the "good quiz bowl" people at PACE cannot even keep their questions secure before they are played. Scandal is a-brewing!

  101. It is upsetting to hear that a student would play at Nationals on questions that he had previously seen/heard. Unfortunately, I have personally encountered teams on a number of occasions that I was about 98% sure had seen the questions before playing them, but I had no way to prove it so I kept my mouth shut. For example, at a tournament a few years ago, a team that had never been good previously (or since) all of the sudden knew everything and knew it quickly -- including two lesser known works by Italo Calvino not nearly as famous as If On a Winter's Night a Traveler. (Strangely, they were only geniuses on certain rounds, leading me to believe that they had not seen the whole set.) When we played Dorman about a week later, I asked their team -- including Nick Clusserath, their "literature specialist" at the time -- and no one had ever heard of these obscure Calvino works. Another time, a J.V. team rang in on a question where the first 5 words were "He was born in 1923..." and (correctly and with great confidence) answered "Roy Lichtenstein." Even if you knew that Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923, how could you be so sure that some other famous person wasn't also born in 1923?

  103. It is sad that these players (and coaches?) would want to win so badly that they would cheat. They are clearly missing what the competition is supposed to be all about.

  117. HSNCT does not only have a bigger canon than PACE, it has a more difficult one. I have heard HSNCT tossups on things that I have heard in the hard parts of bonuses and even in the powers of certain tossups. While I have not played a PACE set, I have seen the 2009 questions, and they were not nearly as difficult.

  130. im pretty sure HSNCT has a larger cannon for these reasons:
  131.
  132. 1.Current Events
  133. 2.Math Computation (prev years)
  134. 3.random tossups on stuff like "paper bag"
  135.
  136. Conclusion: because HSNCT chooses to include non-academic tossups in their packets while PACE tries to keep their questions as academic as possible, HSNCT's cannon is larger than that of PACE.
