  3. a mahogany and brass ship's wheel sculpture
  4.
  5. A ship's wheel sculpture is here, ready for a captain to steer an imagined ship.
  6.
  7. Crafted primarily of rich mahogany wood, this sculpture bears a strong resemblance to a real ship's helm. It stands full height on a polished pedestal, to which a sturdy barrel is attached. A base of dull metal rests beneath the pedestal and extends under the length of the barrel, capable of blending in with its shadow in the right light. Heavy rope wraps around the length of the barrel, with some ends dangling all the way to the base of the sculpture. A close examination may reveal that some of the hanging lines have embedded steel rods to help support the weight of the sculpture. Connected to the other end of the barrel is the crowning feature of the sculpture, a large wheel with eight spokes and a highly polished brass hub. The end of each spoke has a series of identical curved ridges for a comfortable handhold, while a smooth finish of resin prevents the wood from splintering. As a small artistic touch, a series of dolphins has been painted along the felloe, each facing an alterate direction so that some seem to leap upwards when the wheel is turned.
