  1. @article{kitchin-2016-autom-data,
  2.   abstract =     "In the current scientific publishing landscape, there is a
  3.                  need for an authoring workflow that easily integrates data and
  4.                  code into manuscripts and that enables the data and code to be
  5.                  published in reusable form. Automated embedding of data and
  6.                  code into published output will enable superior communication
  7.                  and data archiving. In this work, we demonstrate a proof of
  8.                  concept for a workflow, org-mode, which successfully provides
  9.                  this authoring capability and workflow integration. We
  10.                  illustrate this concept in a series of examples for potential
  11.                  uses of this workflow. First, we use data on citation counts
  12.                  to compute the h-index of an author, and show two code
  13.                  examples for calculating the h-index. The source for each
  14.                  example is automatically embedded in the PDF during the export
  15.                  of the document. We demonstrate how data can be embedded in
  16.                  image files, which themselves are embedded in the document.
  17.                  Finally, metadata about the embedded files can be
  18.                  automatically included in the exported PDF, and accessed by
  19.                  computer programs. In our customized export, we embedded
  20.                  metadata about the attached files in the PDF in an Info field.
  21.                  A computer program could parse this output to get a list of
  22.                  embedded files and carry out analyses on them. Authoring tools
  23.                  such as Emacs + org-mode can greatly facilitate the
  24.                  integration of data and code into technical writing. These
  25.                  tools can also automate the embedding of data into document
  26.                  formats intended for consumption.",
