  1. 500 years. That's how long scientists had predicted it would take for the dust to settle. The meteor that was heading straight for Earth made the one that killed the dinosaurs look extremely mediocre. A 100% human fatality was expected, while the dust in the atmosphere would prevent light from reaching Earth and impose a new ice age.
  2. There we obviously plans to divert or even destroy the meteor. But Project Tranquil was put into effect as a fail safe. I know, could they have chosen a more cliche name? 350 of us were put into suspended animation on a moon base.We were selected by looking at various aspects of our being. We were all exactly 19 years old. All males were 6'0" and weighed from 150-175 lbs. All females were 5'8" and weighed from 115-140. The objective was to select subjects in perfect health and fitness. We were to be awoken immediately if they were to succeed in avoiding the impact. So when I was awoken by an automated nurses I knew humanity had failed and that I was now a part of an endangered species.
  3. Looking around I saw that I was alone aside from the robotic nurses. They said some of the sleepers would not survive the freezing and thawing process. But surely I couldn't be the only one to make it.
  4. "Where is everybody else?"
  5. "You are the last one to be successfully awoken, There is a message for the mission leader from Earth.
  6. I wasn't the mission leader, only third in command. Lowe and Gardner must not have made it. I told the automated nurse to lead on to the communication room. As we walked into a room just feet away from where my chamber was I noticed there were 4 other people in the room waiting for me.
  7. The room we were in was sleek white and minimalistic. Little to no details aside from the large screen integrated into the wall and a keyboard below it. I started the communication deice up and there was one video message from Earth. Dated for 498 years ago. were those the last words of the planet? I opened the video and Michael Mcoy appeared on the screen. He was the lead scientist in charge of Project Tranquil and oversaw the entire operation.
  8. "Hello Mission Leader. We've got good news and bad news. The good news is the meteor didn't hit earth. We destroyed the meteor but we didn't account for the resulting debris. A thick layer of rubble came into Earths orbit. Creating a kind of bubble around us. It's impossible for us to launch any ships through the debris without losing the ships. Our scientists estimate it will take another 200 or so years for the rubble to normalize its orbit, and allow us to launch any more mission vessels."
  9. And with that the video monitor went blank.
  10. My heart sank into oblivion, how could they have possibly overlooked something like this?
