  1. (07:11:54) Cheeseness: Hey NathanBagelStapley
  2. (07:12:00) NathanBagelStapley: hello
  3. (07:12:00) Syd: Hey NathanBagelStapley! We're just about to get started
  4. (07:12:00) Permafry_42: Yay Bagel is just in time!
  5. (07:12:05) NathanBagelStapley: cool cool
  6. (07:12:07) TimeGentleman: Hi Bagel :)
  7. (07:12:08) NathanBagelStapley: it works
  8. (07:12:09) JelDeRebel: NBS
  9. (07:12:12) BadAsp: Bagel, welcome!
  10. (07:12:20) NathanBagelStapley: thanks!
  11. (07:12:21) Permafry_42: k should be starting in 3
  12. (07:12:23) Permafry_42: 2
  13. (07:12:25) Permafry_42: 1
  14. (07:12:42) Permafry_42: just let me know when its showing on your guys' end
  15. (07:12:48) Syd: We're live
  16. (07:12:58) JelDeRebel: and kicking
  17. (07:12:59) TimeGentleman: got ads
  18. (07:13:15) TimeGentleman: got intro
  19. (07:13:21) JelDeRebel: still better than aid
  20. (07:13:22) Cheeseness: NathanBagelStapley: We were just talking about how your art was an initial inspiration for the game. What kind of initial directions did you expect the game to go in when you were approached about that, and how did that change over time?
  21. (07:13:22) JelDeRebel: s
  22. (07:13:56) NathanBagelStapley: aaaahhh
  23. (07:14:01) Cheeseness: Super secret insider tip: When you're doing this sort of thing, make your intros so that that lets people get ads out of the way before main content starts
  24. (07:14:03) NathanBagelStapley: hehe sorry my writing is slow
  25. (07:14:06) Cheeseness: It's OK! :D
  26. (07:14:10) NathanBagelStapley: and also horrible spelling
  27. (07:14:17) NathanBagelStapley: but yeah
  28. (07:14:18) manuelcalaca left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  29. (07:14:30) KeithS [Mibbit@hide-9101A217.dhcp.embarqhsd.net] entered the room.
  30. (07:14:33) BadAsp: That title screen still looks beautiful
  31. (07:14:35) Permafry_42: love the idle animations
  32. (07:14:39) NathanBagelStapley: Tim just didnt really have an idea when we pitched the kickstarter
  33. (07:14:51) NathanBagelStapley: other than he knew he wanted it to be in my style
  34. (07:15:06) NathanBagelStapley: so initially i would just send him wierd idea sketches over email
  35. (07:15:17) TimeGentleman: I never walked past the snake even once I'd picked it up!
  36. (07:15:19) Cheeseness: Ah, I couldn't remember whether that was clear before the Kickstarter campaign ended or not, but I thought that was the case!
  37. (07:15:22) JelDeRebel: it feels like it was more about the documentary than the actual gam imo
  38. (07:15:25) NathanBagelStapley: for i think a month before we launched the kickstarteer
  39. (07:15:42) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: Hah, really? When I first tested the game, I thought that players might get grumpy about not having a new location to explore
  40. (07:15:44) NathanBagelStapley: yeah it was about the Doc first
  41. (07:16:20) TimeGentleman: Bagel there was a lot of back and forth in the docs about what area you'd focus on. Did you end up coming up with a lot of concepts that made it in the game?
  42. (07:16:37) Permafry_42: i love all the snake animations
  43. (07:16:41) NathanBagelStapley: yeah a bunch of them
  44. (07:16:44) TimeGentleman: cheeseness yeah, it's a good job there weren't any new items there!
  45. (07:17:02) hatsman [Mibbit@26D9ED4C.8586BB4D.74BC71E0.IP] entered the room.
  46. (07:17:09) Mimness [Mibbit@hide-58D3305C.lns20.hba2.internode.on.net] entered the room.
  47. (07:17:21) Cheeseness: Hi hatsman
  48. (07:17:23) Cheeseness: Hey Mimness
  49. (07:17:30) Fhqwhgod [Mibbit@hide-5F3B83FD.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] entered the room.
  50. (07:17:31) Mimness: Hey :)
  51. (07:17:34) Cheeseness: Hey Fhqwhgod
  52. (07:17:39) Sven_Q45: Hey
  53. (07:17:43) Fhqwhgod: sorry I'm late
  54. (07:17:51) Sven_Q45: No problem
  55. (07:17:57) Cheeseness: It's all good
  56. (07:18:00) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley any examples (or are you just typing slowly)
  57. (07:18:06) TimeGentleman: ;)
  58. (07:18:12) NathanBagelStapley: ah sorry im kind of lost
  59. (07:18:15) hatsman left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  60. (07:18:24) Cheeseness: We were looking at this image just before you joined. How early was this one done? http://41.media.tumblr.com/75b69b3b07b5c1ff76ac00965306d128/tumblr_n7ff5mzDPZ1qgy77po1_500.jpg
  61. (07:18:24) NathanBagelStapley: ah i painted this background
  62. (07:18:30) NathanBagelStapley: this was in the initial prototype
  63. (07:18:32) Marius [Mibbit@hide-6026E6F0.hsi5.kabel-badenwuerttemberg.de] entered the room.
  64. (07:18:32) Cheeseness: Oh yeah, this was a super early background too
  65. (07:18:35) TimeGentleman: yeah, the chat moves fast!
  66. (07:18:35) Cheeseness: Hey Marius!
  67. (07:18:41) Sven_Q45: Hi Marius
  68. (07:18:43) NathanBagelStapley: first thing i painted
  69. (07:18:46) NathanBagelStapley: MARIUS
  70. (07:18:49) NathanBagelStapley: whats up
  71. (07:18:51) BadAsp: Almost skimmed over the mailbox during my first time here, but I tried everything again, and wouldn't you know it, there the poster was!
  72. (07:18:55) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley yeah, I loved that the lumberjack, tree and this bg all made it into the main game
  73. (07:18:55) Marius: Hellooooooo
  74. (07:19:03) Marius: Oh man Bagel is here Bageeeeeeeeeeeel!!!!
  75. (07:19:04) TimeGentleman: Hey Marius!
  76. (07:19:04) NathanBagelStapley: hey man
  77. (07:19:08) Mimness left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  78. (07:19:10) Syd: Hey Marius!
  79. (07:19:10) NathanBagelStapley: hi dude
  80. (07:19:15) Mimness [Mibbit@hide-58D3305C.lns20.hba2.internode.on.net] entered the room.
  81. (07:19:34) Cheeseness: Ah, Curtis
  82. (07:19:46) BadAsp: Curtis is here!
  83. (07:20:11) Marius: Hi everybody how are you? Hey its Curtis
  84. (07:20:17) NathanBagelStapley: Marius all the stuff i see you doing on the internet is awesome.
  85. (07:20:24) Syd: Curtis: an example of creating something productive out of stupid knee-jerk internet reactions. :P
  86. (07:20:26) NathanBagelStapley: i guess were supposed to talk avout the game though
  87. (07:20:31) TimeGentleman: Will Wheaton has kind of a Jack Black thing going on here
  88. (07:20:40) NathanBagelStapley: totally syd
  89. (07:20:49) Marius: Oh man thank u :o
  90. (07:20:50) BadAsp: the book reading book is kinda cute though
  91. (07:20:58) BadAsp: *book-reading cat
  92. (07:20:59) foodoo: Later Shayter
  93. (07:21:00) NathanBagelStapley: ooh happy faces
  94. (07:21:04) KeithS left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  95. (07:21:05) TimeGentleman: Syd did people actually get pissy about that?
  96. (07:21:06) Cheeseness: Curtis' design changed a little from that initial design we saw in the prototype
  97. (07:21:24) NathanBagelStapley: it leaked and lots of people called him a hipster
  98. (07:21:31) NathanBagelStapley: and they were sad about it
  99. (07:21:35) GameClubFan_341824 [Mibbit@hide-6E6BBBBF.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] entered the room.
  100. (07:21:39) Syd: That leak of the early animation test was probably the first instance of people jumping to conclusions and calling scam and such
  101. (07:21:40) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: There were some people who instantly pushed a stereotype onto the first design in the prototype
  102. (07:21:41) Cheeseness: Yeah
  103. (07:21:45) GameClubFan_928864 [Mibbit@hide-9101A217.dhcp.embarqhsd.net] entered the room.
  104. (07:21:46) KeithS [KeithSwang@hide-9101A217.dhcp.embarqhsd.net] entered the room.
  105. (07:21:50) GameClubFan_928864 left the room (quit: Quit: GameClubFan_928864).
  106. (07:21:52) Cheeseness: Hey KeithS
  107. (07:22:00) Marius: So I stayed at Bagels place for a couple days while I was in the US. Bagel always started his day with a coffee from a sweet coffeeplace, and watched Dogs in the park.
  108. (07:22:07) Marius: Is that still true Bagel?
  109. (07:22:07) TimeGentleman: I didn't think they actually kicked up a fuss about it. Boy, these internet people
  110. (07:22:12) GameClubFan_341824 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  111. (07:22:12) KeithS: hello :)
  112. (07:22:20) NathanBagelStapley: yes good time Marius
  113. (07:22:23) Syd: Unfortunately, I saw the comments for the articles about the leaks. >.>
  114. (07:22:30) NathanBagelStapley: my mattress is not on the floor anymore
  115. (07:22:49) NathanBagelStapley: also i have a great picture of marius next to a smiling box
  116. (07:22:52) Marius: Yay :)
  117. (07:22:54) Cheeseness: :)
  118. (07:22:57) NathanBagelStapley: but i lost my phone
  119. (07:23:01) TimeGentleman: Syd I'd be quite interested in going back and looking at those! Perhaps I only saw people being affectionate about it on the DF forums
  120. (07:23:02) NathanBagelStapley: sad face!
  121. (07:23:35) NathanBagelStapley: some people always likes curtis
  122. (07:23:35) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley has workinmg on this game affected the way you approach your art now in any way?
  123. (07:23:46) NathanBagelStapley: mmmmm
  124. (07:23:48) Marius: When I started interning at DF, Ray taught me how to animate in Maya. First charater I tried animating with was of course Curtis
  125. (07:23:50) Syd: I just love that DF embraced the whole "hipster lumberjack" fiasco like this
  126. (07:23:51) NathanBagelStapley: i learned alot
  127. (07:23:53) NathanBagelStapley: so yeah!
  128. (07:24:00) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: I feel like backer exclusivity of a lot of information made it hard to do proper expectation management outside of the backing community. The majority of people "in the know" seemed pretty happy
  129. (07:24:12) TimeGentleman: Man, I've got to stop giving Bagel yes or no questions! ;)
  130. (07:24:20) Cheeseness: Ha ha
  131. (07:24:23) NathanBagelStapley: curtis became my favorite
  132. (07:24:26) Cheeseness: NathanBagelStapley: Do you have a facourite character in the
  133. (07:24:27) Sven_Q45: maybe?
  134. (07:24:27) Cheeseness: Never mind
  135. (07:24:30) NathanBagelStapley: yeah this is a crazy style of talking
  136. (07:24:30) Cheeseness: lol
  137. (07:24:34) NathanBagelStapley: booya
  138. (07:24:50) Cheeseness: Wil Wheaton ended up being a really good match
  139. (07:24:59) NathanBagelStapley: yeah he nailed it
  140. (07:25:06) TimeGentleman: cheeseness even so, even if they thought it was a real part of the game, he's a fucking lumberjack!
  141. (07:25:21) NathanBagelStapley: yeah man
  142. (07:25:23) foodoo: Was there a conscious decision to not get cloud shoes for Shay?
  143. (07:25:25) Cheeseness: [Insert generic family friendly language warning]
  144. (07:25:36) TimeGentleman: foodoo good question
  145. (07:25:41) Permafry_42: god i am in love with jack black's voice
  146. (07:25:47) Syd: Internet people jumped to conclusions and thought the final game was going to look just like that early animation/camera test, that basically sums up the knee-jerk reaction
  147. (07:25:48) TimeGentleman: Cheeseness oops, sorry!
  148. (07:25:54) Cheeseness: It's cool
  149. (07:26:21) NathanBagelStapley: i think so but im not totally sure the reason for the cloud shoe thins foodoo
  150. (07:26:35) NathanBagelStapley: tim and the designer dudes would answer better
  151. (07:26:38) TimeGentleman: perhaps didn't want to repeat the puzzle
  152. (07:26:53) TimeGentleman: but also didn't want to just give him some after making vella work for them
  153. (07:26:53) Cheeseness: foodoo: I'd guess that players would be familiar enough with the clouds to not find it too problematic, but for it to still give a slightly different feel for Shay's encounters in Meriloft
  154. (07:27:03) Cheeseness: But you can run around as Vella for ages without putting them on, so maybe not :)
  155. (07:27:14) Mimness: Brother Lightbeard has a fairly heavy name don't you think? No apostrophes there :P
  156. (07:27:56) Cheeseness: Shay's also already wearing boots. Maybe nobody wanted to animate him taking them off :D
  157. (07:28:04) TimeGentleman: I got stuck on this because I didn't realise/didn't think to check that I could interact with F'ther one I was on the ladder
  158. (07:28:21) Marius: It was always a treat when Bagel sent art to the team, or put it to the internal forum. I only had to do scribbles for the animatics, but loved studying your art.
  159. (07:28:24) Syd: TimeGentleman: That took me a while to figure out too
  160. (07:28:29) Mimness: Me too
  161. (07:28:46) Marius: I remember that is was silly fun drawing feather
  162. (07:29:01) Marius: Sorry, F'ther
  163. (07:29:18) Fhqwhgod: OMG fatshaming
  164. (07:29:21) NathanBagelStapley: thanks man Marius' animatics were the greatest things ever as well i wanted to do them frame for frame.
  165. (07:29:22) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley tell us art/design you like or dislike as it comes up pls!
  166. (07:29:36) NathanBagelStapley: haha
  167. (07:29:42) NathanBagelStapley: ok
  168. (07:29:45) TimeGentleman: I like F'ther's outfit - it's pretty abstract
  169. (07:29:52) TimeGentleman: with the hood thing
  170. (07:29:56) BadAsp: I like everyone's outfits here
  171. (07:30:13) NathanBagelStapley: yeah alot of these guys were jams with our other concept artist and awesome dude Scott C
  172. (07:30:44) Cheeseness: NathanBagelStapley: In the documentary, there was an episode where you were uncertain about what level of involvement was appropriate for you with the project. I don't recall the documentary touching on that again. How did it work out and were you comfortable with how things turned out?
  173. (07:30:51) NathanBagelStapley: he would do quick sketches and we would work it all out and kind of filter it through me and i would do character turn arounds
  174. (07:31:13) NathanBagelStapley: cheeseness
  175. (07:31:21) TimeGentleman: Scott C did the figments and memory drawings in Psychonauts, right?
  176. (07:31:24) NathanBagelStapley: yeah it was crazy at first
  177. (07:31:36) NathanBagelStapley: but that bagel filter thing did start woeking out after a while
  178. (07:31:58) NathanBagelStapley: also it was great to have everyone doing things and i think it really added to the charm of the game
  179. (07:32:08) NathanBagelStapley: yeah timegentleman
  180. (07:32:17) Cheeseness: I mostly do art for fun, but I know it would've been overwhelming for me to have my styles replicated by other people for a large scale project
  181. (07:32:52) Cheeseness: Scott C's general style informed a lot of Psychonauts didn't it?
  182. (07:32:53) NathanBagelStapley: cheeseness yeah it was a wierd thing at first, also the scale of the game got so big after the 3mills
  183. (07:33:02) BadAsp: Ah, one of those infamous puzzles
  184. (07:33:04) Syd: Psychonauts was very Scott C
  185. (07:33:05) BadAsp: The "knot" puzzle
  186. (07:33:10) NathanBagelStapley: he was the art director yeah
  187. (07:33:14) TimeGentleman: I breezed the knot puzzle
  188. (07:33:34) NathanBagelStapley: he designed it all! scott is super great at art
  189. (07:33:34) Fhqwhgod: I took 30 minutes
  190. (07:33:38) Cheeseness: NathanBagelStapley: Yeah. I think the original scale was more like Hostmaster and the other flash games on the DF website. To jump from that to something much larger would have been a huge step
  191. (07:33:46) BadAsp: I think it took me several hours
  192. (07:33:49) Syd: A number of people apparently never figured out that you could basically teleport back down to get new diagrams for the knot puzzle
  193. (07:33:58) Sven_Q45: I think I only did the knot puzzle by accident. :D
  194. (07:34:15) NathanBagelStapley: yeah tim was thinking something like mechanerium
  195. (07:34:15) Cheeseness: Syd: Yeah, and there was a bug there in the first release build for those who didn't
  196. (07:34:22) Permafry_42: before i solve the gyroscope puzzle gonna make sure to show the blue-print to everyone
  197. (07:34:25) NathanBagelStapley: but probably way smaller than that ha
  198. (07:34:56) Cheeseness: Machinarium is another super charming adventure game with less of a digital feel to its art
  199. (07:35:03) GameClubFan_508310 [Mibbit@EA7B8C23.96E0ADEA.F2AD7421.IP] entered the room.
  200. (07:35:05) NathanBagelStapley: i think i spelled mechanarium wrong
  201. (07:35:07) foodoo: Is every knot puzzle solveable? I tried a couple of guesses until I fonud a knot that worked
  202. (07:35:09) NathanBagelStapley: maybe not
  203. (07:35:34) GameClubFan_508310 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  204. (07:35:35) TimeGentleman: machin-arium
  205. (07:35:38) Cheeseness: foodoo: I'm not sure. I think part of the expectation was that players would need to find a knot that they could be confident they could describe
  206. (07:35:42) BadAsp: I'd pay to watch a kid's cartoon called "Danger System 5"
  207. (07:35:46) Sven_Q45: NathanBagelStapley Yeah but I know what game you meant.
  208. (07:35:49) BadAsp: But the Costume Quest cartoon is okay for now
  209. (07:35:58) Cheeseness: Speaking of cartoons, for anybody who hasnt' heard, Costume Quest is- oh. I'm slow today :D
  210. (07:36:00) Syd: Yeah, that Costume Quest cartoon announcement was pretty awesome
  211. (07:36:10) NathanBagelStapley: yes i agree!
  212. (07:36:15) Mimness: Vella's dad is the bomb.
  213. (07:36:23) BadAsp: I get to hear Reynold and Wren voiced for the first time!
  214. (07:36:38) TimeGentleman: there's an interesting mix of simple and busy 9in a good way) character designs
  215. (07:36:42) Fhqwhgod left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  216. (07:36:49) supersoda [Mibbit@hide-CBC6860B.ias.bredband.telia.com] entered the room.
  217. (07:37:15) TimeGentleman: Like Vella's dad vs the other dad here
  218. (07:37:21) Cheeseness: NathanBagelStapley: Were there any pieces of your existing art in particular that you felt guided the game's early concept, or did you try to start fresh with early concept art?
  219. (07:37:50) NathanBagelStapley: the lumberjack came from an initial idea sketch i sent to tim
  220. (07:38:11) NathanBagelStapley: early on before there was an idea for the game
  221. (07:38:34) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley I hope that stuff makes its way into special features!
  222. (07:38:46) enwin [Mibbit@hide-8CC358ED.io] entered the room.
  223. (07:38:48) NathanBagelStapley: ha maybe the art book!
  224. (07:38:50) Cheeseness: Hi enwin
  225. (07:39:00) Cheeseness: I'm really looking forward to the art book
  226. (07:39:07) Syd: Heh, I never stood around them long enough to get that dialogue
  227. (07:39:10) TimeGentleman: marius was a lot of act 2 a surprise to you?
  228. (07:39:12) enwin: hi
  229. (07:39:26) GameClubFan_471120 [Mibbit@hide-9B5445A2.ph.ph.cox.net] entered the room.

  458. (08:12:17) Hyna [Mibbit@5E7E1864.67635A8A.CA42A77A.IP] entered the room.
  459. (08:12:21) Cheeseness: Hi Hyna
  460. (08:12:23) NathanBagelStapley: which one?
  461. (08:12:30) Marius left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  462. (08:12:50) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley he means is that the fooling mom puzzle you wer refering to
  463. (08:12:59) Cheeseness: Yeah, that puzzle
  464. (08:13:04) NathanBagelStapley: ah yeah, sorry
  465. (08:13:07) NathanBagelStapley: that one
  466. (08:13:17) Mimness: Are we going for the ultimate dialogue reveal here?
  467. (08:13:20) Cheeseness: :D
  468. (08:13:22) Hyna left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  469. (08:13:23) lritter: suspicious how the hypercam mold is tried on everyone except the right one ;)
  470. (08:13:24) NathanBagelStapley: i like going into the trophy room place ha
  471. (08:13:30) flesk: Hi. I was playing Snakebird and completely lost track of time. :/ Is the stream over now?
  472. (08:13:38) Cheeseness: Hey flesk
  473. (08:13:40) TimeGentleman: It's cool that the backgrounds in Shay's fake adventure rooms are reminicent of Shellmound and Meriloft landscapes
  474. (08:13:41) Cheeseness: Nah, we're still going :)
  475. (08:13:45) Syd: It's still going, flesk
  476. (08:13:52) Sven_Q45: hi flesk
  477. (08:14:18) flesk: Ok, I'll pop open the stream then. :)
  478. (08:14:24) BadAsp: You're just in time flesk
  479. (08:14:44) flesk: Still gameclubtemp?
  480. (08:14:50) Syd: Yeah
  481. (08:14:55) flesk: BadAsp: Just in time? Didn't it start an hour ago?
  482. (08:15:02) BadAsp: Yeah, sry
  483. (08:15:14) TimeGentleman: I also tried to catch Gus to impress Carol!
  484. (08:15:20) lritter: the resemblance is uncanny
  485. (08:15:25) CeclRousso: That damn leave hipster again..... .
  486. (08:15:27) Permafry_42: almost time to finally show vella again
  487. (08:15:35) Cheeseness: NathanBagelStapley: Was the idea of the Dead Eye Druids being made up by a bunch of kids something you explored as well? https://twitter.com/leepetty/status/595968960153001984
  488. (08:16:19) NathanBagelStapley: ah honestly Lee and Levi Tackled those girls
  489. (08:16:20) Permafry_42: since we have 4 streams I figured we should try to show as much obscure stuff as possible
  490. (08:16:30) NathanBagelStapley: pretty much from beggining to end
  491. (08:16:33) TimeGentleman: Permafry_42 did you look at the window as Shay yet? Saddest dialogue ever!
  492. (08:16:40) NathanBagelStapley: if i remember correctly
  493. (08:16:46) Mimness: "Please don't be a cat" Hahaha <3
  494. (08:16:49) Permafry_42: i can do it again if you want
  495. (08:17:07) BadAsp: If tree vomit can make someone rich, I GOTTA try that! XD
  496. (08:17:11) TimeGentleman: permafry_42 not if you already got it :)
  497. (08:17:27) TimeGentleman: oh ok. Yaaay sadnees :'(
  498. (08:17:47) TimeGentleman: I found it a little frustrating that Mom was so useless
  499. (08:17:57) BadAsp: I was wondering when we would get to Vella again!
  500. (08:18:08) TimeGentleman: no wonder Shay started thinking of her as a computer
  501. (08:18:23) Cheeseness: I felt like she was just focused on stuff that wasn't important to Vella more than her being useless (although when Marekai traps them, she doesn't seem to be able to do much)
  502. (08:18:37) Syd: [INCREDULOUS GASP]
  503. (08:18:41) Cheeseness: I love her hair
  504. (08:18:41) Sven_Q45: I liked the part with Shay. Now he sees real things!
  505. (08:18:44) Syd: I like how descriptive the subtitles can be sometimes
  506. (08:19:03) TimeGentleman: well, useless for hints to all the puzzles anyway!
  507. (08:19:14) Permafry_42: my favourite dialogue is this knife dialogue
  508. (08:19:30) Mimness: Looks like ma could use a snack. Skinny minnie!
  509. (08:19:38) GameClubFan_744939 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  510. (08:19:42) BadAsp: I think knives reflect how their owner handles them
  511. (08:19:44) Sven_Q45: lol
  512. (08:19:50) strudelkopf [Mibbit@hide-77A6E428.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] entered the room.
  513. (08:19:58) BadAsp: Well, we had a knife and a spoon, I was wondering when there would be a fork
  514. (08:20:11) GameClubFan_872150 [Mibbit@hide-C9C07608.dyn.plus.net] entered the room.
  515. (08:20:17) NathanBagelStapley: haha nice move
  516. (08:20:55) strudelkopf: I never thought I'd see a love story between cutlery, so great
  517. (08:20:56) TimeGentleman: MILD SPOILER the end cutlery joke in the credits is just fabulous and I didn't see it coming!
  518. (08:21:02) lritter: hehe the three rules of sentient silverware :D
  519. (08:21:20) NathanBagelStapley: ha ah cool yeah tim wrote all those end credit ideas
  520. (08:21:26) NathanBagelStapley: those were fun
  521. (08:21:31) Mimness: "And the dish ran away with the spoon" >w<
  522. BadAsp beansmyname
  523. BadAsp beansmyname
  524. BadAsp beansmyname
  525. (08:22:18) GameClubFan_872150 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  526. (08:22:27) Permafry_42: at quarter to we may stop early and finish up to the finale next week
  527. (08:22:57) Sven_Q45: Marekei. I must think of Malachi Rector from Moebius everytime. :D
  528. (08:22:59) TimeGentleman: like I said in the forums, I think this big plot elaboration works better as the mid-point of a single game coming right after the big Mog Chothra twist
  529. (08:23:00) NathanBagelStapley: i actually have to bail in like 5 mins or so
  530. (08:23:08) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley nooooo
  531. (08:23:14) CeclRousso: Moebius.....
  532. (08:23:19) Cheeseness: No probs. Thanks heaps for joining us!
  533. (08:23:21) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley pack lots of trivia in for the last 5 mins!
  534. (08:23:23) NathanBagelStapley: haha sorry
  535. (08:23:42) Cheeseness: Do you think you'll be able to join us for any of the other planned sessions? (we've got two left)
  536. (08:23:47) NathanBagelStapley: ok this dude was designed a bunch by our guy Derek Brand
  537. (08:23:48) NathanBagelStapley: he is awesome
  538. (08:23:57) Cheeseness: Derek is great
  539. (08:23:59) NathanBagelStapley: i think so cheeseness
  540. (08:24:00) Cheeseness: All of DF's artists are awesome
  541. (08:24:10) NathanBagelStapley: not next weekend though!
  542. (08:24:16) NathanBagelStapley: the weekend after should be ok
  543. (08:24:18) Sven_Q45: What do you think of Moebius CeclRousso?
  544. (08:24:22) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley was gonna ask about that. what exture do you imagine his head havintg? Klingon-y? Groot-y?
  545. (08:24:23) Cheeseness: Derek was behind most of Massive Chalice's visual design IIRC
  546. (08:24:36) TimeGentleman: Or just fleshy?
  547. (08:24:38) NathanBagelStapley: ah its supposed to be like pulled skin
  548. (08:24:48) NathanBagelStapley: thin skin cause those people are wasting away
  549. (08:25:14) NathanBagelStapley: tim showed us referance from Brazil
  550. (08:25:17) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley ah cool. that reminds me of George RR Martin describng people as having skin as thin as parchment
  551. (08:25:20) NathanBagelStapley: terry gilliam movie
  552. (08:25:20) Sven_Q45: i liked that part!
  553. (08:25:25) TimeGentleman: *characters, obv!
  554. (08:25:31) NathanBagelStapley: yeah like that timegentleman
  555. (08:25:36) Cheeseness: :)
  556. (08:25:38) CeclRousso: Sven_Q45: I couldn't stand the dialogues and art of Moebius for more then five minutes. Not the best grade I can give to a game that I backed. :\
  557. (08:25:50) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley ah, fantastic! THe Jim Broadbent scene, isn't it?
  558. (08:25:57) Sven_Q45: That´s a shame. well ok.
  559. (08:26:10) NathanBagelStapley: the voice actor?
  560. (08:26:30) lritter: a taco pill, is there a crueler way to take all enjoyment out of a thing %)
  561. (08:26:30) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley no, sorry, the actor in that Brazil scene.
  562. (08:26:35) CeclRousso: If I got questions about Mom (knowing very well how weird that questions sounds), who at DF or the team of Broken Age should I ask those questions?
  563. (08:26:38) NathanBagelStapley: ahh
  564. (08:26:42) NathanBagelStapley: not hip to that
  565. (08:26:47) NathanBagelStapley: i dont know
  566. (08:26:57) gr8tmir [Mibbit@hide-5A6E86B4.hsi.kabel-badenwuerttemberg.de] entered the room.
  567. (08:27:09) NathanBagelStapley: maybe i can answer your questions about mom
  568. (08:27:20) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley ha, fair enough. He's amazing - you might have seen him in Moulin Rouge or Hot Fuzz
  569. (08:27:45) NathanBagelStapley: aaahh i think i know who you mean
  570. (08:27:48) strudelkopf left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  571. (08:28:10) BadAsp: This area took me several tries to get through
  572. (08:28:10) gr8tmir left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  573. (08:28:10) Sven_Q45: I liked messing with the ship. :D
  574. (08:28:12) Cheeseness: CeclRousso: What are those questions?
  575. (08:28:13) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley I LOVE the hexipals
  576. (08:28:22) Sven_Q45: BadAsp Dito.
  577. (08:28:31) NathanBagelStapley: cool thats straight from Scott C!
  578. (08:28:33) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley did they go through much iteration?
  579. (08:28:37) Sven_Q45: Or haxigals.
  580. (08:28:39) NathanBagelStapley: he did the first drawing of them
  581. (08:28:45) Permafry_42: this one is a bit finicky
  582. (08:29:00) lritter: i foresee a hexipal game
  583. (08:29:02) NathanBagelStapley: originally they were going to fit together and cruise around in weird shapes
  584. (08:29:07) Mimness: Yeah I got stuck in that corner for a while
  585. (08:29:18) Cheeseness: That would've been interesting
  586. (08:29:26) NathanBagelStapley: ok yall i have to bail!
  587. (08:29:27) CeclRousso: Out of all things to think about Broken Age (and I like that it gave me things to think about. love the game), the thins I have the most difficult thing to grasp, is how Mom is a computer in Act 1, and a "real" mom in act 2. Does Shay know that in Act 1 but just act out by calling her a computer?
  588. (08:29:29) Sven_Q45: Count me in!
  589. (08:29:36) NathanBagelStapley: that was fun
  590. (08:29:36) Mimness: Thanks for joining! :D
  591. (08:29:37) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley thanks so much for joining us!
  592. (08:29:39) Cheeseness: Thanks you again, NathanBagelStapley! Look forward to chatting with you again for the final session!
  593. (08:29:49) BadAsp: See you next time NathanBagelStapley!
  594. (08:29:53) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley you ended on a sweet trivia titbit!
  595. (08:29:58) NathanBagelStapley: cool yeah good chatting! yeah ill be here in 2 weeks
  596. (08:30:03) NathanBagelStapley: killer! thanks!
  597. (08:30:08) Cheeseness: CeclRousso: IIRC, there's a line in act 1 where Shay says that he's sorry for treating her like a computer
  598. (08:30:08) TimeGentleman: NathanBagelStapley yayyy!
  599. (08:30:10) CeclRousso: Thanks NathanBagelStapley
  600. (08:30:10) NathanBagelStapley left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  601. (08:30:15) gr8tmir [Mibbit@hide-5A6E86B4.hsi.kabel-badenwuerttemberg.de] entered the room.
  602. (08:30:22) Cheeseness: But I found that difficult to adjust to as well
  603. (08:30:48) TimeGentleman: cheeseness I think that's in this act
  604. (08:30:54) TimeGentleman: He says it to his dad iirc
  605. (08:30:57) Sven_Q45: I needed a bit of time for that.
  606. (08:31:08) Cheeseness: I thought he'd said it in the first act too, on the faux bridge
  607. (08:31:17) TimeGentleman: his dad has a line about how they didn't irritate him so much before he wa a teenager, which I think is key to the whole thing
  608. (08:31:35) TimeGentleman: faux bridge?
  609. (08:31:39) Cheeseness: Yeah
  610. (08:31:47) Cheeseness: Where Shay goes to get his "missions"
  611. (08:31:56) BadAsp: THIS area took me some time to get through too
  612. (08:31:56) Cheeseness: With the squeaky toy buttons and little fake wheel
  613. (08:32:01) Syd: I think I kind of accidentally got through this hallway part when I played it. :P
  614. (08:32:01) GameClubFan_162984 [Mibbit@hide-5A6E86B4.hsi.kabel-badenwuerttemberg.de] entered the room.
  615. (08:32:08) beansmyname: Bridge as in bridge of a ship
  616. (08:32:17) TimeGentleman: oh, hmmm. No, he says he's sorry that they programmed her with the memories of a sad girl
  617. (08:32:41) Sven_Q45: Who´s a sad girl?
  618. (08:32:47) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: That too
  619. (08:33:01) TimeGentleman: sven Shay says that to Mom in Act 1 after she tells her story of the sacrifice girl
  620. (08:33:03) CeclRousso: All these details to think about makes the game so much more worthwhile then pretty much every other game I have played in the genre.
  621. (08:33:04) BadAsp: Yeah!
  622. (08:33:04) Cheeseness: But that's an interesting point - it's contradictory
  623. (08:33:27) BadAsp: THERE she is
  624. (08:33:35) TimeGentleman: I'd be interested if you could dig that line up Cheese
  625. (08:33:53) Cheeseness: This is the fake bridge here http://static4.gamespot.com/uploads/screen_kubrick/949/9490474/2419086-gameplay_broken_age_shay1.jpg
  626. (08:34:00) Permafry_42: there we go! might just have enough time for an outfit
  627. (08:34:02) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: Yeah, I need to find time to scrounge through and dig some stuff up
  628. (08:34:17) CeclRousso: Forgot to ask Bagel how to get a print of some of his art shipped here to Sweden.
  629. (08:34:19) TimeGentleman: I think it's all a metaphor for teenagers getting grumpy, taking their parents for granted and finding them embarassing. It perhaps doesn't work quite so well literlally
  630. (08:34:22) Cheeseness: Mmm, sterilisation
  631. (08:34:28) Permafry_42: or perhaps we'll end it on this cutscene? Up to you guys
  632. (08:34:43) TimeGentleman: though someone else pointed out there is a line that Vella reads about his Slurm therapy going well or whatever
  633. (08:34:51) TimeGentleman: that could imply memory wping
  634. (08:34:51) Cheeseness: SPLARGH
  635. (08:35:09) CeclRousso: TimeGentleMan: Interesting theory, that metaphor.
  636. (08:35:15) Cheeseness: Yeah, that's a nice thought
  637. (08:35:35) Sven_Q45: Yeah Vella! :D
  638. (08:35:38) TimeGentleman: cool :) y'know, seeing them as money/food dispensing machines!
  639. (08:35:40) Permafry_42: she's such a terrorist lol
  640. (08:35:48) Sven_Q45: lol
  641. (08:35:50) Sven_Q45: yeah!
  642. (08:36:08) Cheeseness: It does seem like there's a lot of implied control/guidance that would lead Shay to distance himself from his parents and be more susceptible to Marek's advances
  643. (08:36:09) TimeGentleman: It is funny how Velaa goes straight to DESTROY EVERYTHING
  644. (08:36:20) Sven_Q45: bomb-happy :D
  645. (08:36:24) Permafry_42: stop here or do the radiation suit puzzle?
  646. (08:36:38) TimeGentleman: More, permafry_42!
  647. (08:36:43) Permafry_42: righto
  648. (08:36:49) TimeGentleman: Yayyy!
  649. (08:36:58) Cheeseness: She's so bent on violent solutions. I had hoped that her character arc would see her take some responsibility and get the perspective that the path of fists is not always the best path, but I kinda like that she's true to herself all the way through
  650. (08:36:58) TimeGentleman: I'm in charge now
  651. (08:37:05) supersoda left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  652. (08:37:06) Cheeseness: :D
  653. (08:37:32) Sven_Q45: Wrong music.
  654. (08:37:43) TimeGentleman: cheeseness she does at least eventually realise that blowing the factory up might kill some people!
  655. (08:37:59) Cheeseness: I suspect she does. She just doesn't care
  656. (08:38:07) Cheeseness: She shoes no remorse for any of her actions
  657. (08:38:20) ElaineMarley [Mibbit@hide-580B75B4.red-79-146-166.dynamicip.rima-tde.net] entered the room.
  658. (08:38:30) Cheeseness: Hi ElaineMarley
  659. (08:38:37) TimeGentleman: well, she does start to go back on her plan til Mom tells here there are no people there
  660. (08:38:42) ElaineMarley: Hello!
  661. (08:38:46) Sven_Q45: You can see that Vella and the grandpa are from the same family. :D
  662. (08:38:50) CeclRousso: Doesn't she show that for separating Shay from his mother?
  663. (08:39:05) ElaineMarley: Hurrah cupcakes vs the patriarchy!
  664. (08:39:06) Cheeseness: Oh, she does show remorse for tricking Hope
  665. (08:39:50) gr8tmir left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  666. (08:39:55) GameClubFan_162984 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  667. (08:40:07) TimeGentleman: Love all the music obv, but especially the stuff at the start of Vella's bit in this act is great. So creepy
  668. (08:40:27) RealTime [Mibbit@hide-4BFF87A9.austin.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  669. (08:40:31) Cheeseness: Hi RealTime
  670. (08:40:38) RUBICN64 [Android@315C698D:F09A0212:62368FE3:IP] entered the room.
  671. (08:40:56) TimeGentleman: so weird how creepy this dad is!
  672. (08:41:00) Cheeseness: I love how creepy tha guys is
  673. (08:41:01) Cheeseness: Ha ha
  674. (08:41:18) Syd: That face Shay made
  675. (08:41:35) CeclRousso: Double Fome just have to do a Loom 2.
  676. (08:41:43) TimeGentleman: sounds to me like that incoherent chanting is "one of us!2 from Freaks
  677. (08:41:43) Cheeseness: I get the impression that it's stuff he's imitating from Harmn'y rather than stuff he's conscious of the implications of
  678. (08:42:05) Cheeseness: A Loom sequel sure would be sweet
  679. (08:42:21) TimeGentleman: cheeseness that's interesting. Socially conditioned!
  680. (08:42:26) BadAsp: You need to make a recipe for one of those cupcakes, I'll gladly eat one!
  681. (08:42:30) Cheeseness: Just got word from David Gardner that he's planning to join us for the next session
  682. (08:42:39) Sven_Q45: I just want to play another game with a music interface!
  683. (08:42:40) TimeGentleman: sweet
  684. (08:42:43) Cheeseness: (he was lead animator on the first act IIRC)
  685. (08:42:55) TimeGentleman: F'ther reminds me a bit of the aliens at the start of Fifth Element
  686. (08:42:56) Cheeseness: He says to say hi to everyone :D
  687. (08:43:06) CeclRousso: Is he still working at Double Fine? Gardner?
  688. (08:43:09) Sven_Q45: Hi back. :)
  689. (08:43:11) Cheeseness: Nah, he's moved on
  690. (08:43:24) TimeGentleman: The anmation in this is great. Love all the idles
  691. (08:43:49) CeclRousso: That's a shame. Not that I can judge his work, but he's an entertaining dude.
  692. (08:44:04) ElaineMarley: I'm loving all these cupcake responses I only tried a few of those myself
  693. (08:44:15) Cheeseness: Yeah, he's a nice guy
  694. (08:44:37) Cheeseness: He's the "ADVENTURE GAMES ARE NOT DEAD!" guy from the DFA pitch video if people don't remember him
  695. (08:44:50) RealTime: One of the favorite things about this game is how pretty much each object interaction with every person is unique. Really promotes trying random things out.
  696. (08:45:08) Sven_Q45: I liked Tims adventure game reference.
  697. (08:45:23) Cheeseness: It's always fun to explore hidden dialogue in adventure games :)
  698. (08:45:25) RUBICN64 left the room (quit: Input/output error).
  699. (08:45:36) Sven_Q45: Eastereggs...
  700. (08:45:39) CeclRousso: For me he's the one who managed to involve Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball in the same discussion as Ico.
  701. (08:45:51) Cheeseness: ^_^
  702. (08:46:15) TimeGentleman: SAY, IF YOU ASLL LIKE ADVENTURE GAMES WITH LOTS OF UNIQUE RESPONSES...
  703. (08:46:16) ElaineMarley: Tbf most adventure games don't have this amount of hidden dialogue. I was just playing The Night of the Rabbit, and it's nothing like this.
  704. (08:46:35) BadAsp: Cool, a frosting cane
  705. (08:46:45) Cheeseness: Ha ha, this cane. It was so disappointing
  706. (08:47:04) Cheeseness: Like with the fish guts spray, my first thought was "YAY! I CAN SMACK EVERYTHING NOW"
  707. (08:47:06) TimeGentleman: THEN YOU SHOULD PLAY
  708. (08:47:12) Cheeseness: But there isn't really anything you can whack at all
  709. (08:47:13) Sven_Q45: Cool frosting. yeah.
  710. (08:47:23) TimeGentleman: (anyone?)
  711. (08:47:32) Cheeseness: DEN THERE BAN THAT
  712. (08:47:39) Permafry_42: yeah there isn't any significant responses to the cane unfortunately
  713. (08:47:43) TimeGentleman: YEEEAH hey wait
  714. (08:47:47) Permafry_42: plus i need to finish this up soon
  715. (08:47:48) Sven_Q45: ElaineMarley But NOTR was a cute game. :)
  716. (08:48:05) ElaineMarley: I am enjoying it, yeah :)
  717. (08:48:44) TimeGentleman: Does everyone read these two girls as purely platonic?
  718. (08:48:46) Cheeseness: Maybe having lots of dialogue to explore is something that originated from LucasArts' adventure games (which Ben There, Dan That definitely plays a a lot of homage to)
  719. (08:48:51) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: I do!
  720. (08:49:18) TimeGentleman: cheeseness me too
  721. (08:49:36) Cheeseness: I feel like it's more interesting that way. There aren't really direct indicators of a romantic relationship that I spotted, so there's no reason to jump to that conclusion just because they're close
  722. (08:49:53) ElaineMarley: Either way works for me :)
  723. (08:50:12) Cheeseness: Shay sucks :D
  724. (08:50:16) CeclRousso: Cheeseness: It's a least one of the similarities I found between Broken Age and the old classics. And one the reasons I find Broken Age to be superior to most attempts to match the classics.
  725. (08:50:18) TimeGentleman: cheeseness I agree, but suddenly wondered if everyone agreed
  726. (08:50:29) Permafry_42: this was my favourite part of the game
  727. (08:50:37) Cheeseness: Yeah, I love this so much :D
  728. (08:50:37) Permafry_42: awesome reveal
  729. (08:50:40) ElaineMarley: Same, it's amazing
  730. (08:50:57) Mimness: These girls :3
  731. (08:51:01) Cheeseness: It makes some positive statements about peer pressure and honesty in relationships
  732. (08:51:20) TimeGentleman: yeah, it's nice because them having blinded themselves was pretty depressing!
  733. (08:51:30) Permafry_42: i love that vella's parents wanted to sacrifice their daughter instead of just sending her to college
  734. (08:51:48) BadAsp: Is it wrong that I enjoyed this scene?
  735. (08:51:57) Sven_Q45: Mh.
  736. (08:52:01) Permafry_42: nope i enjoyed it too
  737. (08:52:04) ElaineMarley: Why would it be wrong it's the best thing evert
  738. (08:52:32) Cheeseness: I recorded my first playthrough so that I'd have something to refer back to regarding my first impressions. I think I went "YUSS!" and threw my hands in the air when Dawn and Courtney flew away
  739. (08:52:41) Sven_Q45: That bird. :)
  740. (08:52:56) Permafry_42: lol i was pretty happy too
  741. (08:53:04) ElaineMarley: When they said that they wore nothing under their robes I wondered how I would be able to take them off them without embarassing them, I didn't see how it happened coming and it was so well set up.
  742. (08:53:19) Cheeseness: Although, how did they get their arms out of their sleeves whilst holding hands?
  743. (08:53:21) TimeGentleman: elainemarley yes totally!
  744. (08:53:35) RealTime: magic
  745. (08:53:49) Permafry_42: alrighty one its made I'll be having to end it
  746. (08:53:54) Permafry_42: *once
  747. (08:53:54) ElaineMarley: same way Shay's clothes got sucked off him at the beginning of the game
  748. (08:53:59) TimeGentleman: cheeseness they let go and then held hands again once they landed in the bird. Another "plothole" solved"
  749. (08:54:07) Permafry_42: thanks again for everyone who joined us!
  750. (08:54:12) Cheeseness: You know, I don't remember that flippy animation at all. I wonder if that wasn't in there when I first played
  751. (08:54:22) TimeGentleman: Thanks Permafry_42!
  752. (08:54:27) Cheeseness: Thanks for streaming, Permafry_42
  753. (08:54:30) Sven_Q45: Cheese you made a playthrough?
  754. (08:54:44) Cheeseness: Sven_Q45: Yeah, but it's not online
  755. (08:55:01) TimeGentleman: cheeseness that's a clever idea for recording your feedback and reactions
  756. (08:55:02) lritter left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  757. (08:55:15) Sven_Q45: I´d rather see a LP from you not just a playthrough.:)
  758. (08:55:17) beansmyname left the room (gone baby gone).
  759. (08:55:23) Cheeseness: And the sound in the recording died partway through, so it's not something I'm likely to publish
  760. (08:55:26) TimeGentleman: HEY that card says Act 1!
  761. (08:55:29) Syd: Thanks for streaming, Perma, and thanks to everyone who joined us! We'll be continuing next week!
  762. (08:55:30) RealTime: thanks for the stream
  763. (08:55:33) RealTime left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  764. (08:55:36) Cheeseness: I made a gif of just the webcam, but it's like 30MB
  765. (08:55:42) CeclRousso: Thanks to everyone organizing this. It was fun. :)
  766. (08:55:49) Cheeseness: No problems. THanks for coming! :D
  767. (08:56:08) CeclRousso: Gött jobbat, as we would say in swedish.

  770. (08:56:26) TimeGentleman: Ha ha, you recorded yourself on webcam? "When this puzzle happened, I made this face"
  771. (08:56:27) Syd left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).

  777. (08:56:50) ElaineMarley: Thanks permafry! Bye everyone
  778. (08:56:53) CeclRousso: Lunch? It's past midnight here. :)

  780. (08:56:56) Sven_Q45: Yes Cheese.
  781. (08:57:00) Cheeseness: It's 9am here :D

  791. (08:57:53) Permafry_42 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  792. (08:58:04) Cheeseness: Man, party at TimeGentleman's house \o/
  793. (08:58:09) Cheeseness: Be there in 5
  794. (08:58:20) TimeGentleman: cheeseness don't suppose you would have any links (or were they discussed on the DF forums somewhere)?
  795. (08:58:32) TimeGentleman: cheeseness, I'll save you some :)
  796. (08:58:37) Cheeseness: Not off the top of my head, but I'll see if we can throw something up in the forum thread
