  1. What a time it was
  2. With so few friends to turn to
  3. What a time it was
  4. When all we did seemed wrong
  5. We'd broken all our bonds and the battle plan was drawn
  6. What a time, what a time it was.
  7.
  8. 1965, the year of UDI
  9. Who'd have though the country would survive or stay alive
  10. The UN made us outcasts
  11. The British said we couldn't last
  12. That we'd fall when the oil did not arrive
  13. Now I don't say we were right
  14. And I don't say we were wrong
  15. I'm just trying to tell it like it was in simple song
  16. You see when people love their home land
  17. They regard it as their own land
  18. And they fight, whether they're right or they are wrong
  19. What a time it was
  20.
  21. With all the world against us
  22. But not all we did was wrong
  23. We'd broken all our bonds but life kept going on
  24. What a time, what a time it was
  25.
  26. 1966 saw some ocean politics
  27. when two men climbed a taiga to have talks about the talks
  28. they talked and talked and talked and talked
  29. and talked and talked some more
  30. the negotiations ended in deadlock
  31. And in 1968 there was another great debate
  32. This time aboard The Fearless
  33. But the end was much the same
  34. November saw a new flag raised while the people prayed for better days
  35. And hope was still the surname of the game
  36. And in 1970 our Republic came to be
  37. Solutions seemed to fly a little further out of reach
  38. But the next year through the gloom came Sir Alec Douglas-Home
  39. And it seemed they'd found a way across the breach
  40. So in early '72, Lord Pierce and his retinue arrived to put the nation to a test that they had planned
  41. but still it seemed the plan was bad, no better than the last we'd had
  42. and "no''s the word we heard across the land
  43.
  44. What a time it was
  45. With all the world against us
  46. What a time it was
  47. When all we did seemed wrong
  48. We'd broken all our bonds and the battle plans seemed drawn
  49. What a time, What a time it was
  50.
  51. 1975 and Mr. Vorster had arrived with president Kaunda for some talks across the folds
  52. But nothing there could be resolved, the problem there was too involved
  53. And the impetus there slowed down until it stalled.
  54. 1976 was when cosmopolitics finally put pressure on the players in the game
  55. Kissinger's proposals were broadcast to the nation with one man and one vote the final game
  56. Well, Geneva should have sealed it, but instead it just revealed that all the players in the game were pulled apart
  57. Well they had to find a way to start again another day with all prepared to take a peaceful part
  58.
  59. What a time it was with all the world against us
  60. What a time it was
  61. When all we did seemed wrong
  62. We'd broken all our bonds but the battle carried on
  63. What a time, what a time it was
  64.
  65. Now in 1978 while the rest still vacillate
  66. We found a way to work it out within the land
  67. Never mind the rest, what we're doing's for the best
  68. When all we want is a peace we understand
  69. There'll be votes for all the folks
  70. And with sanctions gone we hope
  71. To rebuild this little country to a proud and single nation
  72. We've got to end this dreadful war
  73. We've found what we've been fighting for
  74. Will the world wake up and stop this conflagration
  75.
  76. What a time it's been so few friends to turn to
  77. What a time it's been
  78. When all we did seemed wrong
  79. We're trying to put things right but the battle still goes on
  80. What a time, what a time it's been
