- OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - With a crop of free agents on board, the Oakland Athletics will start the season with a new-look logo as well.
- Gone is the friendly elephant balancing on a baseball and waving a bat in its trunk. The new logo features a front view of an angry-looking pachyderm holding two crossed bats in its trunk.
- ''I think it will be good from a merchandising standpoint,'' general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday at a press conference to unveil the new look.
- The elephant logo has been used since Connie Mack adopted it in 1902 after New York Giants manager John McGraw dismissed the Philadelphia Athletics as ''white elephants.'' The new elephant logo will go on the left sleeve of the uniform.
- The Athletics also will be wearing all-green caps with their road uniform and sporting new warmup jackets and practice jerseys.
