- It was a cold winter afternoon and I was sipping on some coffee while enjoying a nice book at the local library. Well, that was until the author described the ‘dragons’ as having only two hind legs and two wings. I immediately placed it back onto the shelf, my day being ruined by witnessing yet another improper depiction of dragons. It may not seem like much, but this is a horrible pet peeve of mine, the reason I dropped A Song of Ice and Fire, Skyrim, and Peter Jackson’s film adaption of The Hobbit, much like I now put down this unnamed book. I guess I just treat the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual too much like a Bible of sorts when it comes to depictions of mythical creatures. But nevertheless, I’m unable to enjoy fiction that doesn’t depict dragons in a way I approve of, it’s very irritating.
- I thought my day was ruined, when I came across a rather lovely sight. Across from the aisle where I was returning the book, I noticed a beautiful looking girl sitting across from the aisle. She had long, flowing blonde hair, put into a ponytail held up by a large, black bow. Her skin was fair, and her eyes were a deep shade of blue. She wore a plain orange shirt, and a long, tan skirt. I couldn’t also help but notice that at her side, she carried a long white cane with a red section at the bottom. She was running her hand along the pages of the book, which was covered in small bumps. She was blind.
- Nevertheless, she was rather beautiful, so I thought why the hell not and decided to make my move. The library of all places to pick up girls; is this what my life has come to? Well, she’s probably far cleaner than girls at clubs and bars, nor as prudish as girls at church, maybe it’s not a bad place at all.
- I casually sit down beside her and clear my throat, her head perks up a little and looks around. “H-Hi” I say, stuttering all the way. Off to a bad start already, please lord no, not today. “Hello!” She says in a cheery voice back to me. Oh fuck my life, I didn’t think of a topic to start a conversation with, this could easily grow awkward. What to do, what to… oh right, what’s she reading? I pick up her book and look at the cover, “The Count of Monte Cristo” it reads. As I did this, the girl looked around confused for a moment. “I couldn’t help but notice you were reading The Count of Monte Cristo! Oh that’s one of my favorites!” I say. This is an absolute train wreck; not to mention I only have basic knowledge of this particular book after looking up Spark Notes for a class, that’s the one about the 18th century Batman right? Right. The girl looked even more confused, though she just giggled lightly to herself and then replied, “Oh really now? I have to say that it’s quite the classic. What did you like most about it?” Fuck. What do I say? “Oh uh.. that’s a toughie.” She’s onto me; I can see it in her eyes. “I love the part where Edmond escapes from jail.” That’s ripped right from the Wikipedia article now isn’t it? Maybe she can’t tell, she doesn’t seem like the type to browse Wikipedia anyway. I swear I’m going to read it one of these days; I need to stop being such a pleb.
- “Oh yes, that was great!” She said.
- “Of course! Oh where are my manners, I don’t believe I got your name.” I reply. Hopefully not a bad segue into this question.
- “Lilly” she replies, “And yours?”
- “Cody” I respond. “Pleasure to meet you Lilly. Might I say that’s a wonderful name?”
- “Thank you! And it’s nice to meet you too.” Lilly responded.
- Man, dating simulators make it seem like you have to talk to a girl five times just before you can get her name. I guess reality is ironically enough, a lot simpler than that. Do I dare take the next step?
- “Say, are you doing anything tonight? I just thought that since I’m free, we seem to share similar taste in literature…” I respond, probably shouldn’t have trailed off, but there’s no going back now.
- “No, I’m free. I must say I admire the confidence. My sister might be getting here soon to pick me up actually, but if you put your number into my phone, I can text you my address.”
- “Can’t you just write it d-“ I stop myself. Dammit Cody you say the dumbest shit sometimes. Lilly thankfully didn’t seem to mind it too much as she simply giggled again. I added my number to her list of contacts, and she sent me her address. Once again, I didn’t need to respond to 20 questions just to get her address and phone number, maybe this is why guys who play dating sims never get any chicks, maybe we’re simply being misled. Or rather, they only seem to attract the socially awkward type, which I must admit I am, but this sudden surge of confidence is a welcome surprise. I could take her to one of my favorite cafes, though I assume a movie is out of the question. Maybe I should have scheduled it later, oh well, no going back now. Guess I’ll just go with the café and pray for the best, after all, you know what they say, “wait and hope.”
